I have heard there is a strong correlation between education, increased wealth, and lower birth rates. Education and wealth increase are also increasing global trends.

Why did the population decrease in history? Would we have those conditions again?

I do see the population decrease. But I am not sure it will continue to decrease, in particular, like the curves showed in the OP. The curves in your figure indicates that the population will be stabilized at a lower level, and could increase again. After all, higher population DO have some advantages. The recent policy change in China is a clear picture.

It is funny that this situation is so similar to the global warming issue.
