Last week, as I was speaking with my sponsor, I was given an assignment that I had never been given before by any previous sponsor. She told me to read the Second Step and look for myself in it. I read it, and realized I related to both the Intellectually Self-Sufficient one, and the One Who Had Faith But Did Not Believe That God Would Work In My Life. When I told my sponsor, she was pleased, because she has been trying to hammer away at me about my intellectualizing the program, and my recovery. Then, at the end of the discussion, she told me to reread the Second Step, and see I if I see anything else I relate to. I was skeptical, but did as I was told. I ended up underlining a lot of lines, as if I had never read them before. So, two days ago, she told me to read the Third Step, and look for myself. I just got done and found a treasure trove of stuff.
I am just sharing this because I have been in AA almost 20 years, and have had a few sponsors. Some gave me reading assignments, which I ignored. Others just let me whine and complain about my awful lot in life. This time, I am doing the homework given me by my sponsor, and trying to listen to her.
If you do not have a sponsor, get one, and ask for help with the steps. I honestly thought I did not need help with the steps for most of my time in and out of the rooms. This time, I have asked for help and have been willing to do the footwork.
