Working on Sunday

Hello!,

I need some help on a topic that has been making me go back and forth. Can Christians work on sunday? Please do provide scripture for either answer. I really do appreciate it! I also put up a poll too!

I voted yes. But is a a sheepish yes. I think it is better for us not to work Sundays, if we can avoid it. For it is currently a day dedicated to church and seeking God. If everybody worked Sunday, then the benefit of that day would be lost.

However I have to admit, I often buy fast food, or have a meal out on a Sunday. It for me is a grey area, I don't like to go shopping on Sundays, but often find myself at McDonalds or a Pizza shop.

The bible tells us not to judge others decisions regarding the Sabbath day, some keep it, some feel it is not a strict rule.

Col 2:16 Therefore let no one pass judgment on you in questions of food and drink, or with regard to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath.

On the Sabbath you cannot do any work including going out to get food.

They were not gathering to store nor harvesting. It was incidental eating. Show me the verse where it is prohibited.

Here is what God says:


Exo 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
Exo 20:9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:
Exo 20:10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Going out and finding food was prohibited on the Sabbath. That had to be done the day before on the day of preparation.

So what you're saying is that if someone is having heart attack or a stroke they're out of luck on the Sabbath because we cannot do any work?

Yet, He said to them, “Which one of you who has a sheep, if it falls into a pit on the Sabbath, will not take hold of it and lift it out? Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath. Then he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” And the man stretched it out, and it was restored, healthy like the other.
Matthew 12:11-13.

Seems work that medical professionals like me do is okay with Jesus!

In the OT, there wasn't 911 or specialized people who came to do those things so those things were normally fatal back then anyways. As for today? The Sabbath was fulfilled by Christ so there is no day one cannot work which includes Saturday and Sunday.

1) Sabbath is Saturday and it never changed.
2) Gentiles were never required in Scripture to keep Sabbath, with the exception of traveling or staying within Israel's borders.
3) Paul made it abundantly clear in Colossians 2:16-17 that the believers he was writing to were not required to keep Sabbath.

So I'd say we are not restricted from working on Saturday, let alone Sunday. Turn the lights off and on again, walk as far as you like, carry whatever you want to carry. You can even work a shift, though I found that rushing to work after church was not pleasant, and I recommend against positioning yourself to be in that situation.

Again, they were not gathering or harvesting nor preparing food nor cooking it. What they did is not considered melachah.

This is "pikuakh nefesh" and is mandatory in Judaism to do on Shabbat. It is lawful to do good on the Sabbath.

Jesus didn't disagree...quite the opposite. He DID break the Sabbath but had reasons why he could without sin.

There are valid reasons, such as saving a life, etc. But that supersedes Shabbat...
