  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Taylor and I eat out a lot, just because it is so hard to cook for two. We waste so much food.

I actually cooked 3 times last week, Taylor as like mom what is wrong with you.

I will do baked talipa because it comes in individual pieces and it is easy to just thaw out two. I love to cook pot roast but so much of it gets thrown away. I hate to waste and we do all the time. Our dogs eat very well though.

Taylor loves redbeans and rice, but when I cook them we waste so much.

I did buy that new handi vac last weekend and bought some ground round and pork chops and put them up in packages of two. So far the meat looks good no freezer burn.

I'll get to be a SAHM in about 6 months. Right now I am working as a freelance writer while attending college. :) The most difficult thing for me is making meals when I get home from work and having the energy to clean up the house and take care of my son while getting my homework/work done.

I have a four year old and a six month old. I worked full time up until a year ago (maternity disability for six months). I now work part time as a school psychologist (hi carrieage!!).

Cooking meals was so hard. I was so exhausted after getting home from work that cooking seemed close to impossible. Then I discovered Schwans. It is expensive but worth it for a few good meals. We couldn't afford them for all of our meals but for a few meals a week - it was worth it. The portions were perfect for two or three people.

I also just made chicken and fish a lot along with the five minute pasta bags and some vegs.

Keeping the house clean was the most difficult. I have to say, though, that it's still hard working part time. Keeping the house clean is hard, period. It is easier to cook good meals when you just work part time.

Keep it up mommas. It is so hard to work full time and keep it all together. Actually, it is close to impossible to keep it all together. We do what we can.

Can I join this club?

I'm maybe not the "typical" working mom, but I'm definitely not a SAHM either. I'm a preschool teacher, so I get to wear jeans and sweaters. I get up at 5:30AM, my husband helps get me and our six month old daughter out the door and then I'm back home with the baby around 1PM. So, like I said it's a bit out of the norm.

The hardest part of being a working mom for me is keeping Anina on a consistent schedule with naps and bedtime.

Me too, though I am home at 9am I take over care of my two daughters until 2pm then go back to work and am home sometime after 5pm.

I am a school bus driver. I am totally not the typical working mom. I am part time Working mom and part time SAHM.

I'm a senior engineering manager in a deregulated electric utility, and have been constantly except for two six-month maternity leaves (back in the days when six months was the maximum leave that was protected by Canada's employment standards: it's a full year now.)

My daughters are fifteen and twelve: I must say that life has become much easier as they've matured to the point where they can get to and from their ballet-school on their own by city transit, and help more with meal preparation and tidying.

Hi Everyone, may I join?

I am a working mom also, my DD will be 3 in April. I work as customer service/claims rep for a third-part adminstrator for several insurance companies.

I am so glad someone started a thread about this, as my friends outside of work either do not have children or their children are old enough to do a lot for themselves (middle schoolers). My co-workers all have grown children.

My biggest issues are keeping the house clean and organized, dealing with my DD who is a picky eater and has health issues partially due to it. Also, my employer is not so family friendly and gets a little miffed when I have to take time off for her doctor's appts, even when I make the time up.

Wel, thanks for letting me share and hope to get to know you all better soon.

God Bless,
Laura

I have never understood getting a college education to stay home?

My mom died when I was 16, so I didn't get to finish highschool. I did get my GED though. I would love to take some online college courses, I just don't know when I would have time.

Wow 6 months, that must have been wonderful. I only got to take 2 weeks. Not because of work, but because that is all I could afford to take as a single mom.

Me, too.

I work at a direct marketing company. We design, print, and mail all of that stuff you get in your mailbox everyday that you just throw out anyway! :p I work in client services primarily setting up their creative pieces, running reports, and processing data files. I absolutely hate every minute of it!
However, it’s the perfect job for me right now since I’m also taking classes. My company is very laid back and has a really lenient internet policy so basically as long as you get your work done, and you’re not doing anything inappropriate, you’re allowed to do what you want. So, that means I can do nearly all of my online class assignments and studying from work so I can spend more time with my family at home!! This semester I only have 1 class that I have to take onsite and it’s just 1 night a week, too!

You get to play on CF at work too, that is cool.

I hate my job at the moment too. My boss left and I don't think I like the new one. He is just temporary until they hire a new CFO.

He is supposed to be a teacher at his church and when I hear him tell lies and things like that it just bothers me so bad.

Hello, fellow working moms. I'm in a somewhat unusual situation--my husband's a SAHD. He's disabled--seizure disorder. And my "maternity leave" was 24 hours. Adoption day fell on my day off, and our son had already been living with us for a year by that time. He's 4 now. I work rotating shifts with changing days off. I'm in public safety communications in a small town--if you call 911, I answer. My husband and I tend to share household duties. He cooks as often, if not more, than I do. The biggest challenges we have are scheduling and transportation. We have to plan around my crazy work hours for things like appointments and grocery shopping, as my husband can't drive.

I'd love to hear about crockpot recipes. One we use is "Coke roast". Put the roast in the crockpot, and sprinkle it with a packet of dry onion soup mix. Pour a regular, NOT diet, Coke or Pepsi over it. Put the lid on and let it cook on low for 6-8 hours until it's done. It's nice and tender, and does not taste sweet. Sometimes my husband does the same thing with a pork roast but he uses apple juice instead.

That has to be hard with him not driving.

I cook ham in coke. Of course we only eat ham twice a year, Christmas and Thanksgiving. The last one I cooked was ugly but it tasted wonderful. I had boiled it in coke and brown sugar all night. Yummy!

So you have an adopted child? I am thinking of fostering, just waiting on direction from God.

Hello  I thought I would poke my head in here too. I'm a working mom too.

I work from home as a database manager for a British corporate responsibility magazine. I do things like putting the articles that go into the magazine onto the website, set up username and passwords for subscribers, handle any subscriber queries, manage ad copy we sell sponsors etc. Working from home has its perks, but working for a magazine means tight deadlines and it can be incredibly stressful, I am often on the computer until 10pm doing stuff.

Most days I think that it would be much easier for me to go out and work in an office but I know that a lot of women would love to be able to do what I do. I know that my daughter needs me at home and I'm grateful that I can be there...just wish it was a little less stressful.

I don't know how women (myself included) manage to juggle work, husbands, children and keeping a house clean...no wonder my house is permanently a mess ;)

I'm a transcriptionist... so unfortunately... even though I work from home I cannot keep the little one with me.

I am hopeful that eventually they will both be able to stay with me during the day (in the summer) but that probably wont' happen until Randi is at least 4-5 years old.... and even then I may need to do some part time sitting for her because she needs other kiddos to play with (and I cannot take off from work to take her somewhere).

Does anyone have a problem with guilt about working extra?

Maternity leave is covered by Canada Employment Insurance, a government service. You don't get paid a full salary -- 55% of your average insured earnings up to a yearly maximum insurable amount of $41,100. But it's enough to manage comfortably.
