I've met a few people selling satellite/phone/etc. services through this organization and it seems fairly safe, the products are large enough that you're not fussing over little objects. So many of the businesses are set up with friends selling to each other, starting an unnecessary spending cycle. www.5LINX.NET/L&D

I've also known some people set up reputable medical transcription businesses.

What we really need is for someone to INVENT a home-based business system that is both convenient and practical. So many people (mostly women) who choose to sacrifice career for their families get stuck in a powerless trap.

The product--how much crystal can one possibly need? Or overpriced decorations, makeup.... Costly educational toys are marketed to other parents who are struggling to make a few extra dollars.

Alternative sales--Every school and church club needs fundraisers--the business model could incorporate fundraisers into this (there's a federal US process for filing as a fundraiser, to keep out sheisters). How about a product that people need, besides chocolate bars and expensive wrapping paper?

Business set-up--the tax laws complicate one's desire to make a few dollars. Could an organization offer part-time employment rather than contracts? Probably not feasible, but worth looking into.

Day work--someone could set up a production business that hired day workers, and offered significant day care...more of a ministry than a profitable business.

I'm a self-employed carpenter full time but winters are slow sometimes so last year I started a part time tee shirt screen printing business at home but I don't really have the time or know how to advertise correctly. I have a website but it takes me so long to learn how to design that I don't really have time to spend on making t-shirts too.
I wouldn't mind finding somebody that is honest, motivated, and has web building skills to possibly work with.

ironhead, have you seen cafepress.com? They'll handle all the marketing and distribution, and the seller just uploads graphics. That would mean you're not printing your own, and the retail prices are higher, but it sure simplifies things. They also generate your web store when you fill in blanks.

Yeah I've seen that cafe press site, and thought about it. Cafepress comes in handy if your buying only one or two but your also talking about 17 dollars a shirt compared to about 10 or 11 if you order a dozen or more from someone like me.
It's hard finding something new that everyone else hasn't already thought of.

Don't like the boots huh.... Someday I might be able to afford a shirt too.lol

Could you do something really new, not in the aspect of design, but in the area of service.

For example, Cafe press provides for printing on demand. Could you do that (after the first order of coure). It would mean you would need stencil storage and such, but then for business and club orders, you could give them lightning fast serivce, thus setting you apart, and allowing you to charge more.

Or how about providing a custom service. Eg higher quality shirts than cafe press, and the ability to have the image located whatever size, and whereever the customer wants. Rather than having a 12 shirt minimum at $10 each, make it 5 at $24 each, as you are providing higher quality, and much greater customization.

It would be hard to save a screen for any long amount of time. They are like 20 bucks a screen and they can be reused numerous times over again. I would essentially have to add another 20 dollars to the customers bill.

I'm pretty sure the quality is better anyhow. (I think) cafepress shirts are decals that are heatpressed on and they only use images that are 10x10 or less. Decals will start wearing off after a while while a screen printed image should last the life of the shirt. I do both.

Paypal has a great billing service for businesses, which hardly costs the biller.

1. You set up an account with Paypal (free) and prices for items.
2. They give you links and graphics, where your visitors can click to purchase items.
3. You paste the links into your site, and make up a rerouting page where customers get a "thank you for buying" and are sent back to your site.
4. Paypal accepts payments from customers, and transfers money to your account or your bank.
5. Paypal sends automated notes to you and the customer upon purchase.
6. Paypal records all transactions in an orderly, secure fashion...which you can access and print at tax time.

(Do I sound like a sales rep?)
The only cost to you is a tiny percentage...I forgot what it is, but with one product I tried this with it was something like thirty cents...and I never had to deal with the buyer.

$20 per screen! That's a lot to absorb, along with ink and shirts and other overhead. Our family used to silkscreen when I was younger, and we washed out the screens afterward and reused them. "Just." Ha ha. Screen Wash fumes throughout the house. We did paper stencils, and photosensitizing, and a varnish? gutta? resist that rinsed out with another solvent.

An area for advertising that could keep you busy with batch orders: school and club fundraisers.

The US government has criteria for businesses that present themselves as fundraisers, so you'd have to keep the profit idea in the group's hands. But you could target schools, home school groups, sports teams. Maybe you already do. But treating it like a fundraiser for them meets their need. How many candybars can one eat!!! Everyone needs shirts.

Some people sell multiples of a product on ebay. They list a few, then when a bidder loses, they get an automated message that they can bid again or buy the product at a set rate. I wonder if you can list commission work there. (Will print 20 of your team's shirts for $X). It might be worth popping over and seeing what other tee printers are doing.

My personal input-- printed t-shirts are always that basic round-necked style. I would like to see more in a fitted scoop-neck style (not cap sleeves). Women would buy these.

If you want more input, feel free to PM your link to me.

BBB isn't necessarily a protection against fraud. Some companies join it just to be part of a health insurance group. If someone files a complaint against your business to BBB, then the blacklist begins. It's an "innocent until proven guilty" system, so a lot of fraudulent businesses could be members.

Disciple's Cross sounds interesting. I did a quick search, and didn't find any complaints. If anyone wants to check their chat area, you just need to set up a password:

Spread the Word sounds credible. It appears similar to Giveline, which a local shelter started using this year (I doubted it myself, so haven't used it yet.) The plan is brilliant and very automated...perfect for fundraisers. They have an online bookstore all set up, and you just set up an account and email your friends and clients. They automate all the bookkeeping, billing and distribution, and send you a check. Once this takes off, I think the mainstream booksellers will feel the pinch.

Whether the bookstore is credible or not--I'd guess and hope it's run by IT people, and it's so automated they don't need to get greedy. I wrote to Giveline once, and they responded personally within hours. (Did I already say this?)
