• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

Ok, so I just started my training at a coffee house, busing tables. I have to wear a t-shirt, and my arms are covered in cuts and scars. I've tried wearing band aids and stuff, but my employer doesn't want me to, and I was wondering what everyone thinks about scars and workplaces. Is it bad that customers can see my arms? Would my employer see this as a possible problem? I read over all the company guidelines and I didn't find anything about injuries, and I'm really worried that this may cause a problem, or that I may be confronted about it. Does anyone have any advice? Any strategies to cover my scars and cuts, or make them less noticeable?

I,too,am covered in scars, especially on my arms. I used to try to hide them with makeup,(to no avail) but now that i'm much older, i view them as "battle scars".. Mistakes i made that led to a learning experience.
When i quit TRYING to hide them, people in public quit noticing them and asking about them.
Although my favorite response to "what happened to your arms?" was always "rabid raccoon attack". hehe

Don't even think about them being there. They will fade with time. If anyone is rude enough to ask about them, simply say "battle scars". :)

hey, i had the exact same worries when i first started work, i dont know if its gonna be any different for you but no one took any notice of my scars, theres no need to worry, at the end of the day your there to work, and if anyone asks and u dont want to say, just tell them its none of their business (nicely) your empployer cannot sack u for it (if u were worried about that) its like discriminating someone because of how they look.

ps probably the person it bothers most is you... dont stress

Thanks...I was really worried about this, but I suppose I'll just try and ignore them. I know that my employer can't make me tell her about them, but nonetheless I was worried that she would think it wasnt good for me to look like that if im serving customers food.

Also, love the "battle scars" thing. I get asked a lot about my scars, at school and everywhere else, and I think I might just use that.

I have way too many scars on my arms, and I've never had an employer ask me, but I've had others ask while I've been at work. While it's uncomfortable, I try to reply truthfully, "Several years ago I didn't like myself very much." Typically they drop it after that, though a few will continue to ask and I will have to tell them that I don't care to talk about it anymore. If I think it will help them, I might share more.

I agree with the others, try not to worry too much.

time and care (staying healled) will lesson the veiw and the appearance of scar tissue. but most of all; the healing across your heart: time, exsperiance and growth with help you focus more on other things, and this issue will take a back-seat to other more important thoughts and feelings.

it's been way over ten years for me. i have a few 'battle scars'... they are my reminder of how God loves me so much, that He saved me from my own hand... my scars are very special to me. and every-so-often, i'll meet someone who stirs my heart and memory; then i sit them down and show, and tell them the scary story and history of my salvation and walk through this. ~ love dee

Another board I hang out on brought the issue of healing scars up. And one girl had a dr prescribe her "the thing that helped me the best was an rx clear tape called cordran tape". I guess it applies pressure and flattens the scar and turns it white. A few others use Mederma and the band -aid OTC tape.
I've heard other people say Dermablend will cover most anything.
