The ordination of women to the diaconate in Catholicism would be most interesting. Many conservative denominations like my own (PCA) are also currently debating this issue.

Pope Francis has also already said that in his mind St. Pope John Paul II spoke definitively on the issue. But then he always there was in a hedge.

It's something the Church can't change.

What the Church could do is restore the ancient office but that's a different from an ordained deacon. But it would cause confusion and some would try to create it as a pseudo priesthood.

    Interesting? That's an interesting comment.

There is no basis for saying that the historical diaconate of women was anything like the ordained deaconate that men are ordained to. Yes there was a diaconate for women in some places. They assisted in baptizing other women.

What the pushers of modern ordination of women to the diaconate want is women priests and women bishops. They know if they 'develop' the diaconate they have won. And that because one is ordained to be a deacon just as as priest or bishop/

To be fair to those melted down priests, they probably understood that once a 'study' was commissioned it would only be a foregone conclusion to have women deacons. For the most part when a governing body does a study it is really just greasing the skids for what they want. So they have every right to be upset that pope Francis pulled the rug out from underneath them.

It may be that pope Francis wanted women deacons but in a moment of grace the Holy Spirit intervened.

    Those poor Irish priests.
