How do you propose to do that, when priests are generally the pastors of the parishes that create these?

That was worse than the Cowboy Mass - and that one had live poultry next to the makeshift altar.

It's like going back to medeival period when they had the horrible liturgical abuses known as the "Feast of Asses"--there was a donkey next to the altar and at the end of Mass instead of saying "ite missa est" the priest brayed three times and instead of saying "Deo Gratias," the people said "hee-haw, hee-haw, hee-haw" and the "Feast of Fools" where servants got to be masters for a day and master servants--so youths and subdeacons acted the part of the bishop or priest and according to the Catholic Encyclopedia it bordered on burlesque.

Luckily these things were eventually banned. It seems we need to be reminded of this ban again in our own time

And clearly we can sit around all day and gripe about it, acting holier than thou, or we can choose to encourage those holy priests who are doing exactly what they vowed to do while working to eliminate liturgical abuses. Sitting around and whining, acting like know-it-alls doesn't accomplish a darned thing. Besides, the ranks of those already doing that are nearly full. Do work - there's less competition there.

I agree with Carrye. You are all right, that there are serious errors, and that we must stop them. But sending the pastor a book, or reporting him to his bishop won't help. What we must do is to encourage people who are called to pursue a religious vocation. We must pray. \

Encouraging orthodox priests is one thing, but how do laypersons get unorthodox priests (esp. ones who think that these abuses are actually VII innovations that bolster the spiritual state of the community) to stop committing liturgical abuses?

How do you get anyone to do what you want? One of two ways:

1) Beat them over the head into submission.
2) Non-violent means.

(2) seems more effective. So how does one do that? Pray for a spirit of humility. Write to him. Go talk to him. Love him as a brother. If he does not take your charitable fraternal correction, then humbly approach the bishop.

I'm certainly not suggesting that people should sit back and accept liturgical inventions (where they are truly so, and not simply a result of one's own distaste). I'm suggesting that people not go in with their torches blazing, wearing their "if you only knew how much better I am than you" t-shirt.

While reporting abuse is always the right thing to do, such as if your parish was reserving the front row for the Masons among other things, be prepared to be treated like a pariah in your own parish, have these very accusations thrown at you and looked upon with scorn by your own priest. In either case, your darned if you do and darned if you don't, either way you'll get the very same things hurled at you.
