  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Witchcraft: Control and Christianity

Do you ever feel like people try to control you to get you to believe what they want you to believe? Whether they be pastors, fellow believers, associates, friends, etc...

Do you ever feel others try to manipulate you either by critisizing or marginalizing your viewpoint, or by trying to hold some perceived intellectual insight over your head?

Have you ever shared something intimate and personal with someone only for them to turn around and use it to try and manipulate you into their cause?

Do you ever feel forced, cohearsed or manipulated to do something that you are not personally inclined or have decided to do on your own?

Have you ever been guilty of manipulating or trying to control others?

I know I have and I truly regret it.

The big question here is what role does control have in Christianity?

Is it ever permissible to try and control or manipulate others into our way of thinking?

My answer is absolutely not!

Christianity is an invitation into relationship with God. Our job is to present the invitation, not be like Hagar and try to do God's work for Him by getting people to believe or follow.

It robs and devalues people on a very fundamental level and it destroys trust and meaningful, intimate relationships.

One of the major reasons I believe there is a huge backlash against Evangelical Christianity is because so many ministers have used witchcraft (AKA: control and manipulation) in the name of winning people to the Christian faith. I think society is catching on to this and I think the falling away from these systems of control and manipulation that run under the banner of the Christian faith are spots on our love feasts and I am exceedingly pleased to see them go (they can't get out of the door quick enough). I also deeply regret the times I have taken part in such practices.
What are your thoughts on this?

(Personal prayer: God help me to live and share your message of love that you died to give to each one of us so we could all freely choose to accept it.)

There's nothing new under the sun. People aren't catching on, people won't stop trying to control and manipulate.

We just have to avoid it as much as we can and follow Jesus, not men.

Same as always.

Well alot of people are concerned that evangelicalism is dying. Part of the OP was my take on the reason for it. Society does evolve, however I am afraid you are right...the majority will simply trade one vice for another.

I think there is a little too much personality driven over persuasion and pressure in the Church that is out of sync with the Holy Spirit. But lots of people like that it gives them a sense of security being told what to believe and do all the time. gg

really?
you mean, aside casting spells, Preachers, Pastors, & Ministers doing voodoo, drumming-up souls/spirits,
and using amulets & charms, and lots more! - that's even worse than what passes for 'christianity' in CF hourly.

No wonder! so many are aching, hurting, paining, suffering, acting anxious/depressed, bitter, cutting, & suicidal.
When that happens inside a church, people would be Well-adviced to get themselves out!!! of that 'religion & church' ASAP.

How have you helped people in such states?

Witchcraft is not very nice, agreed. That's why God tells us not to dabble in such pursuits, of control & manipulation; because you never can tell under whose harmful-influence you can wind-up next.

Ive been a victim of control and manipulation of the Church..it really scars someones soul..I just want to share here..there is no place for control

the bible says that Love does not demand or force itself on others or its way..

that is one verse that has kept me going from the confusion and control I felt at the place I was at..

Love must be kind and gentle..patient..not demanding its own way..nor seeking its own..nor haunty

unfortunately these qualities..true qualties lack in the church.and have been forgotten and twisted around to suit people's doctrines.

God forgive us..God bless us...

Those things have no place in the church. We ought to be lead by the Spirit of God.

I have been a victim of manipulative pastors before. Get over it and find a church where you are loved and you can be loved.

*Smack* :o

Oh, sorry Zzub, did that hurt?

Never mind, eh? GET OVER IT!

Not been particularly manipulated as such, well, not everso much anyway, but utterly negligent churches don't help much either.

I did try to get over it by moving on, but I never found a safe church, so I stopped exposing myself to further distress.

Should a victim of domestic abuse just get over it?

How about a rape victim?

The get over it attitude IMO is one of the reasons why the church is in such a bad place. If we stopped trying to sweep it under the carpet and actually dealt with them properly, things would be a heck of alot more effective

Yes it did hurt Sue, but I won't hold it against you forever and ever.

Look I am not about minimising the pain of church abuse (or spousal abuse or rape) - I am about maximising the restoring, redeeming, all-powerful love of God. God is a great God and He sent Jesus to bear our pain and bear our sickness and bear our rejection and bear our shame so we can live a life of freedom, and health, and acceptance in the beloved, and glory upon glory upon glory.

The Roman empire stopped killing Christians because the Christians faced death with so much nobility and graciousness that the Roman soldiers would run into the sand and face death with them converting to Christ in their hundreds.

Peter was nailed upside down to a cross, Paul had his head chopped off, John was boiled in oil, Isaiah was sawn in two, Stephen was stoned to death crying out "Lord, have mercy on them".

So, yes, I feel I can say get over it. I can say Jesus has dealt with your pain, walk in love and walk to the next place.

what about when people try to control people's minds with prayer .

you know .. when they don't pray toward God but pray at the person?

have you ever been in a church culture where people would say "i'll pray for you" as a joking threat?

or people say .. yeah .. instead of dealing with that annoying person

i'll pray for them and they'll have .. an interesting week .

but then again maybe not .

bless .
