  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I too like many people love a good bottle of wine. I am a Yellow Tail (good Ausie wine company). I perfer the Merlot but will drink a Shiraz if I have to ;).

One of my friends here at school lives in Romania. His father owns a winery and needless to say sends some of the greatest wines with his son when he goes home.

Wine is a treat and I do enjoy treats :)!

OK, I just bought a nice Chablis, a Cabernet and some other red from the Bordeaux region. This guy at my local wine store seemingly knows everything, and loves to talk about wine :)

Man, I can't wait to get home and try one out!

My wife is going to wonder why I spent $65 at the liquor store though :D

I am wine stupid-don't even know what "dry" means. I don't mind a sip of whiskey now and then, and don't really care for beer unless it's ice cold and it's 95 degrees outside.

What would you suggest for a wine virgin like myself? It wouldn't be with a meal. (The only wines I've ever tasted had names like TJ Swann & Boone's Farm on 'em ;) )

I love this thread!

If you like merlot or are looking for a red wine, try a syrah! (No, I'm not confusing it with a shiraz)

My sister-in-law brought a bottle at Christmas and I fell in love with it! I've been trying several brands -- generally the cheaper ones aren't as good (of course) but you can find a good bottle for $15-$25. There are also petite syrah wines, but they are a little more expensive.

And if you're a fan of the tv show House ... he ordered a syrah on an airplane in a recent episode :D

Syrah is good. It is the Shiraz I believe. In France and the US the grape is called Syrah. There are slight differences in the taste due to the climate in the US and France as opposed to Australia, Canada and elsewhere.

My favorite wines are wines that have both Syrah and Grenache grapes. Chateauneuf du Pape being the best. But expensive.

But if you look you can find very reasonable Syrah and/or Grenache blends.

Well, cool! I just learned something new. :) I will look for Chateauneuf du Pape ... I'm not sure what to expect when you say "expensive." :p

since you dont mind whiskey, your taste buds can stand the flavor. What I find for wine virgins would be a Cabernet/Merlot blend. Clos Du Bois makes a 85%Cab/15%Merlot blend that has just about perfect flavor. It tastes good as a starter drink and the flavor improves with the meal. If you like that, then try some other pure Cabernet. I think that whiskey drinkers would prefer the heavier flavor of the Cabernet over the softer sirah and pinot noir.

I just had a fantastic Red with Dolcetto and Syrah, and it was very reasonably priced. It is one of those reds that served chilled and has the tinniest hint of sparkle. Very very sweet, and almost purple. If anyone is interested it is Brown Brothers Dolcetto and Syrah (although I suspect it may be scarce outside Australia).

Blessings,

Steve

The Bordeaux was really good. So good that I don't want to drink the last remaining glass or two :D

The Chablis was good, but not phenominal. I'm starting to realize that I really prefer red wine.

Wait a minute..... It's 9:30 AM Eastern. A bit early for wine
