I don't know the man. But I do recall a conversation with pastors at the Toronto session in which they noted he was being prepared for the position and would quite likely be president in the future. Guess they called it.

Then again, why does it matter who is the President of the GC, apart from the fact that he has a job?

That's a good question, actually. What does the President of the GC do, exactly? What are his ministerial duties?

We at UCG just chose a new president last Thursday, BTW.

Why have one at all if all we're doing is giving out jobs?

It's a representative position. An administrative position. It's not a decision-making position as such, but it has a lot of symbolic significance.
AzA,

COB, CEO, COO, CFO? Bondservant?

Father, Son, Spirit, Archangel? Bondservant?

Symbolize/Signify

1 Peter 1:11
11 Searching what, or what manner of time the Spirit of Christ which was in them did signify, when it testified beforehand the sufferings of Christ, and the glory that should follow.KJV

I believe you understand.

General Conference Archives

One of the roles is working with the GC executive committee. You can read examples of their minutes at the link above.

A lot of the work at that level is strategic planning, I would imagine especially for mission work and institutions.

At a local level in the NAD the GC was not a huge influence directly. Every once in a while they would send down a program that we would largely ignore.

But the various Unions and conferences to receive direction and they pass it along.

If you have ever been to a Union meeting they are rather interesting. I happened to go to one in preparation for ordination. A lot of it is just planning for the business and outreach of the church.

And yes, I am sure they are a face to be recognized and to give some unit.

I talked to one of the vp's in charge of strategic planning for the GC once for a short time and discussed what it was he did.

It is probably not an easy job. They are removed from the ground-floor ministry and have to make large decisions without all the information at times.

You may also want to look at one of the statistical reports that are generated:

A discussion piece that has drawn attention on other sites. Ron referenced some of the thoughts in his article.

Report: Ted N. C. Wilson shares his priorities for the coming five years | Adventist Today

At his first news conference since being elected General Conference president, Ted Wilson shares his priorities for the coming five years. He stated that these are early days and he still has to flesh out these priorities, but he said his first emphasis will be on revival and reformation. Another priority will be to lift up the Spirit of Prophecy to be more than devotional-level reading, and to employ them for instruction and counsel. Another issue he addressed was the use of Scripture. In interpreting Scripture, we must make sure we are not following the historical critical approach, he warned.
In evangelism he wants to focus on the great metropolitan areas of the world where more than 50 percent of the population lives.
Asked what his approach would be to bring unity into a divided church, Wilson replied that unity cannot be coerced. What binds us together are our beliefs, but ultimately it is only through the work of the Holy Spirit that unity will prevail, as we remain faithful to Scripture.

A spectrum article with user comments.

I also noticed mixed responses regarding this, however, that seems to be true of anybody, be it on the religious side or on the political side of the spectrum.
