William Wilberforce and Slave Trade

This years anniversary shows us that some, maybe many of Britains millionaires are what they are because of the disgusting slave trade. Some in the past even justified it with verses in the Bible. Does any of you members know which verses? William Wilberforce was an evangelical anglican and two or was it three of his sons became catholics. A wonderfull man who got parliament to pass the 1807 Anti-Slave Trade Act. The film, "Amaising Grace" does not show the gruesome torture the slaves endured. I am so glad as I could not watch torture, it sickens and annoys me. I havent managed to see the film so look foreward to seeing it on T.V. later. No compensation was paid to the poor unfortunate slaves but the slave traders got paid. Today the slave trade worldwide is worse than ever before. Let this anniversary year be a year to get it ended.

i believe you need to look in genesis 9:23 or 24. The jest of the story is that Noah planted a vineyard and that the product of that vineyard was quite good. Noah had become very drunk with the wine and was very naked. His youngist son saw him and told his older brothers about it and the two older brother covered their eyes so they would not see Noah and they covered him. Noah woke up and asked how this came to be and his older sons told the story. Noah then said "Cursed be Canaan The lowest of Slaves will be to his brothers" Some people suggest that this was the justification of African slaves. It is not, Canaan was a Caucasian.

I saw the movie "Amazing Grace". It was absolutely wonderful! And it's coming out on DVD the beginning of June!

There are at least 27 million in the bonds of absolute slavery
Every country around the world plays host to this industry unsavory
Though everywhere it is supposedly outlawed

But you cannot just blame the Sicilian and the Saud,
Nor the African, the Indian, or even God,
Many ‘secular’ and appeasing policy
Supports this regime of human larceny
When in the name of libertarian immorality we applaud.

Hundreds of millions live in some servile bond unending.
Though free on paper, constant new debts their chains appending.
Everywhere we see the creation of this vile caste.
Despite the mountains of blessings we have amassed.
Both rich and poor freely adorn irons in the proud parades of the law-offending.

There is yet another chain-gang six billion shackles long.
Where the prisoners act as each others wardens: the chain links are strong.
Though all hold a universal skeleton key.
So many shun the idea of becoming truly free.
Refusing to leave the jail-house cell are so many of the Earthly throng

Our families in abject slavery need our assistance and our prayer.
Our families blindly marching against the law: the worldly ignorance impair.
Ourselves, we must be freed through repentance.
Lord help us to help each other end iniquitous sentence.
And in your law, your perfect kingdom take release, retreat, repair.

You're looking for Ephesians 6:5

I read the whole section as an encouragement to be respectful of authority figures (parents, bosses), not as an endorsement of slavery. Also - 'masters' could refer to our Heavenly master.


1: Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
2: Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise
3: That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
4: And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
5: Servants, be obedient to them that are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in singleness of your heart, as unto Christ;
6: Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart;
