Only God knows the heart of man. Simple answer. Be blessed.Hi Everyone,
I know this question has been asked a million times so thank you for answering if you do.
So if you commit suicide, will you got hell? And can you point me to passages in the Bible where this is talked about, especially about the hell part?
My daughter's father commited suicide years ago and I would like to know how to answer this when it comes up. I am also curious to know myself. It haunts me to think of him being in hell, however, don't sugar coat it for me. Tell me the truth because I really need to know the truth. Thank you.
I am sorry to hear the news about your daughter's father.Hi Everyone,

Or the end is in sight, but that end is death, whether by your own devices or letting the cancer run its course and kill you. At what point is living just suffering without relief and you're going to die soon no matter what you do there is no treatment or cure for what you have and every single moment is simply agony and you begging God for relief or death to be in pain no more. What if your in severe, unbareable, excrutationg physical pain with no end in sight?
Then you are like Jesus on the Cross. What if your in severe, unbareable, excrutationg physical pain with no end in sight?
To build off of this: I believe it was St. Augustine who said, "You don't know what happens between the bridge and the water". If somebody jumps off the bridge to commit suicide, there still is that time between the bridge and the water for them to make repentance. There have been reports of people who had jumped off a bridge that were screaming out, "Oh God, I'm so sorry!". Horrifying to consider hearing these words in such a situation, but the point is that God can still give somebody an opportunity to come back to Him. There is still time between the bullet and the brain for God to offer somebody a chance to repent.I suggest careful consideration of this quote from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (emphasis added):
Suicide
2280 Everyone is responsible for his life before God who has given it to him. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it for his honor and the salvation of our souls. We are stewards, not owners, of the life God has entrusted to us. It is not ours to dispose of.
2281 Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. It is gravely contrary to the just love of self. It likewise offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, nation, and other human societies to which we continue to have obligations. Suicide is contrary to love for the living God.
2282 If suicide is committed with the intention of setting an example, especially to the young, it also takes on the gravity of scandal. Voluntary co-operation in suicide is contrary to the moral law.
Grave psychological disturbances, anguish, or grave fear of hardship, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the one committing suicide.
2283 We should not despair of the eternal salvation of persons who have taken their own lives. By ways known to him alone, God can provide the opportunity for salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who have taken their own lives.
You all have my condolances for your loss.
Catholic moral theology holds otherwise. If you were to use strict black and white morality you could claim the oncologist murdered that terminally ill patient, knowing that dose of pain medication was lethal.
In Matt 7 Jesus said bad fruit does not come from a good tree... "By their fruits you shall know them" and in Matthew 18 we have "forgiveness revoked" -
So then suicide is not 'safe ground' even for a Christian.
So does that mean, when it says "the dead", that the dead are the people who didn't go to heaven? Or is everyone dead who is dead until Jesus's second coming?
The body sleeps but if you'll remember the story of Lazarus, he was conscious and aware in Abraham's bosom, and Paul said in 2 Corinthians 5:1-8 that when we leave this body, we're with the Lord. Not we're asleep until Jesus comes back, but we are with the Lord. Instantaneous.Yes. Everyone is in fact dead and in the grave. Described as a sleep .... many many many verses about this .... and including Jesus himself describing death as a sleep (ie ..... the Lazarus account) and the apostle Paul as posted before.
When Jesus returns the 1st resurrection of the saved (in the grave) and the saved living at the time and all are taken to heaven.
And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, Today shalt thou be with me in paradise.
Instantaneous.
Luke 23:43
Lazarus in Abraham's bosom is a parable ... it is not teaching about what happens when someone dies.
2 Corinthians 5:1-8 - Paul states he would RATHER be absent from his body and present with the Lord .... all of would RATHER .... but that does not mean that is what happens.
Luke 23:43 -
we also know from the book of ACT's that Jesus himself did not ascend into heaven until 40 days later. Acts 1:3 also read verses 6 through 10.

You turn man back into dust And say, "Return, O children of men." For a thousand years in Your sight Are like yesterday when it passes by, Or as a watch in the night. You have swept them away like a flood, they fall asleep; In the morning they are like grass which sprouts anew.

John 11:11-14
This He said, and after that He said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep; but I go, so that I may awaken him out of sleep." The disciples then said to Him, "Lord, if he has fallen asleep, he will recover." Now Jesus had spoken of his death, but they thought that He was speaking of literal sleep.
Acts 7:60
Then falling on his knees, he cried out with a loud voice, "Lord, do not hold this sin against them!" Having said this, he fell asleep.

For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep.

To have that belief, is to believe that Jesus lied to the thief.
Obviously He did not.
VERILY he said, it was a true statement.
Now Jesus didn't go to Heaven immediately after He died, no. The Son of Man was in the heart of the earth for 3 days, right? Note that when Lazarus (and Jesus didn't give names in His parables, in this story He DID give a name, His parables were always "a certain man" etc) was in Abraham's bosom being comforted he could SEE the rich man being tormented, and the rich man could see Lazarus with Abraham. So no, neither were in heaven or hell, they were both in "the pit" but on one side of the pit is torment, and on the other side comfort. It's an inference, but the side where there's comfort might be "paradise"
It's basically the only way that Jesus was not lying to the thief in telling him VERILY, that he would be with Him in paradise... is that the consciousness needs to go there immediately after death, not a sleep but something that happened "today", it needs to be where Jesus went, and it needs to be Paradise, somewhere that's not evil and a place of torment. Now when Jesus DID go to heaven and is now at His father's right hand, if you're dying, and you're with the Lord, the Lord is now in Heaven, so that's where you'd have to be. He is preparing a place for us, and He is in heaven, so our place, at least until New Jerusalem comes down on the new earth, is in Heaven, temporarily.
you are taking a couple verses and dismissing many many MANY others that plainly state otherwise regarding death .... and also then dismissing the verses in Acts ....
and also there is Mary .... the day after the Sabbath whereas Jesus said ....
John 20:17
King James Version
Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.
You didn't read my post.
I just explained, Jesus didn't go to Heaven the same day as He died. We agree on that. He did go to a conscious place though, where the Thief was also, called Paradise.
Eternal life is eternal life. He who has the Son has the life. So you think that a Christian can have eternal life one minute and lose it the next? That does not fit the definition of eternal. Suicidal people need help, not some kind of religious and dogmatic condemnation that is not biblical. In Matt 7 Jesus said bad fruit does not come from a good tree... "By their fruits you shall know them" and in Matthew 18 we have "forgiveness revoked" -
So then suicide is not 'safe ground' even for a Christian.
The first heaven consists of the earth’s atmosphere, where the clouds float and birds fly. Remember in Genesis, when God created a heaven between the waters? That's the atmosphere. You’ll also remember that in 2 Peter, the apostle writes the “heavens shall dissolve”? It's talking about the first heaven, the atmosphere around the earth, and not where God dwells.
The second heaven, then, is where the sun, moon, stars, and galaxies hang suspended.
The third heaven is the dwelling place of God.
Jesus did not ascend that very day ... He was resurrected and 40 days later he ascended to heaven.
Jesus shows us the pattern
death ---- rest in the grave (tomb)- resurrection - then on to heaven
Agree to disagree but I would encourage you to study it out further .... in a broader context that just a couple verses.
Eternal life is eternal life. He who has the Son has the life. So you think that a Christian can have eternal life one minute and lose it the next?
