Will Unix operating systems erase the M$ Windows monopoly someday?

Will Unix operating systems erase the M$ Windows monopoly someday?

  • Yes, Unix will destroy the Windows monopoly completely!

  • Yes, but Windows will always be around.

  • Unix will rule half the market, Windows will rule the other half.

  • No, but Unix will come close.

  • No, but Unix will always be around.

  • No, Micro$uck$ will destroy Unix once and for all!

Yep...its public domain, the only thing that will cost is the different distro's on CD's etc..Although there again, it can be downloaded from free.

Not if Microsoft and SCO has their way. SCO is claiming rights to the Linux kernel, that Linux is written with stolen code, and Microsoft jumped into bed with SCO.

Technically, SCO has a point. It was their engineers that developed the code in the first place. It's a long story, but what it boils down to is that IMO SCO blew their case by offering a free Linux distro themselves.

95% of all computers in the world running Windows sounds like a monopoly to me. You can't dispute it! :(

WRONG! A monopoly means that you don't have a choice. Well, you do have a choice, and you always have. Should Microsoft be held responsible because their competition sucks? That doesn't sound like free capitalism to me. You have always had choices...PC DOS...OS/2 Warp....All the many shades of UNIX....

I think that Linux will one day take over as the main os for a few reason. Free, stable, and a great os but I think windows will also be around because Microsoft is just too big it will never go away.

Not to bash the whole "stability" issue but what do you mean by "stable?" I run red hat 9.0 with a recent updated kernel and windows XP Pro on the same computer, two seperate hard drives. Lets say I download eSword bible software for both XP and Red Hat... Ok, I did just that. It took me about 20 minutes to install and configure on Red Hat and about 1 minute on Windows XP. Where I am going with this is, windows out of the box for the AVERAGE or even ABOVE average is EASY! I have only been using Linux for about two years and have a lot to learn. I run a linux firewall and web server but for multimedia and gaming it is a nightmare compared to windows. I am sure if manufactures designed hardware to run with linux the tale could be told different. Right now the money is with windows and people buy computers with windows, soooooo hardware manufacturers are going to make hardware that runs windows. Until Linux stops being "free" then it will never take over. The other gripe I have is my time, which in some cases equals money. It takes TIME to learn linux, it does not take much time to "learn" how to get around in windows. I don't seek a flame war, because I think that both operating systems have merit. I think that having both will keep them competitive with each other.

Until Linex has customer support and supports all the hardware that windows does it's never going to last....I've used Linex, nothing but a pain in the butt so I am back to windows xp and am much happier with windows and plan on staying with windows for as long as it's available......

The reason Microsoft will never die out is because people don't want to think. They want to plug in their computers, put in the CD for their games or whatever, and play. They don't care how efficient it is, or who's watching, or whatever else. The open-source market will never gain the momentum it needs, unfortunately.

i'm getting tired of this regurgitated line
it's not up the to customer to get over a learning curve to operate a piece of equiptment
its up the the manufacturer to make it easier and more available

its not the consumers fault that the manufacturers have failed to address these issues

to state that it is and that people dont want to think is just elitist garbage

have you seen the new IBM commercial where it's flashing all these scenes of times in our lives and in our history.... then it says something about the future and at the very end of the commercial it fades in showing "LINUX" then fades out. very awesome. if i am not mistaken IBM is working with Apple to produce the chips for the new Mac G5..... so i definitly think that unix/linux is going to take over...... solaris is a good OS but i heard it is somewhat difficult (not user friendly) to run and the systems that it is on are really expensive (Sun Microsystem computers)... more power to UNIX

Honestly, what do you care if Microsoft is a "monopoly"? I don't know what the exact legal definition of a monopoly is, but I don't think Microsoft is one. The reason MS has 95% of the O.S. market (mind you that's the home/business workstation O.S. market; when it comes to mainframes, web servers, and engineering workstations UNIX/Linux is king) is that Bill Gates is a hell of a businessman! (pardon my French)

He hires some of the best programmers around, pays them enough to keep them from taking jobs elsewhere, and squashes the competition. Sure, Windows is buggy, but could YOU write a better Operating System? I know I couldn't.

I contend that UNIX related OS's are much cleaner and more powerful. I use the UNIX labs to do nearly all my software development for school. But if your goal for using a computer is to chat with your buddies, shop online, or play games, then Windows is what you should buy, and that's why 95% of home computers have Windows.
