Thats was my quesiton. Ty. I suppose with the dawn of evolutionary theory philosophers like Neitszche were keen on a rethink/overhaul of our philosophical conception of humanity. Human being as a function of fitness and selected advantage.
Nietzsche had nothing to do with Darwin and his theory of eternal reoccurence was at odds with the notion of macro-evolutionary progression.
Nietzsche was rethinking what it meant to be human at the dawn of an age in which he perceived the hold of the grand Christian ascetic ideal was beginning to slip from mens minds as their grand theory of everything.
His own internal struggle was that between Christ and Dionysos (the unfettered freedom and chaos of the new born will starring as it were into a void which it desires to fill with its own creations). It was slave morality ( the will to power of the weak being to find ways to prevent the strong from exercising their wills to the disadvantage of the weak) versus master morality (the creative wills to mastery that characterise the religious/cultural/economic masters of every age)
In an age of imperialists e.g. the Franco - German war and of the growth of European empires all around the world he perceived a desire and obsession with power.
In an age of industrialisation and the move to the cities Nietzsche represented the desire for personal authenticity, reinvention and control in a changing world. His superman is the attempt to project what is best about the self and turn oneself into that better vision. But it is not an idea of self improvement based on some idea of what represents progress or morality but rather on the fact or ability to transform oneself. Power without real purpose is rather hollow. Indeed Nietzsche dissolved all the reference points to his sanity in his rejection of religion and society and indeed of any objective reading of history.
I see a powerful will behind all things- the will of the Amighty God that Nietzsche rejected. I also see lesser wills of varying strengths struggling for mastery of their own little empires. I see people who live their lives seeking control of their own lives who never succeed but drive the rest of us mad.
The truly powerful have agendas , they love something greater than themselves, something they serve and cherish with the sacrifice of their lives. Even in the nature of God , the Supreme Being , this love is demonstrated in the Trinitarian nature of God. The Father gives his Son to save the world.
Love is prior to power- richer, more meaningful and does not leave us restless, hollow and slipping into syphllitic madness
