I don’t think the president has the power to dissolve a coequal branch of government in this country.
He doesn't. The Congress is independent of presidential power. That's the whole point.

We have regularly scheduled elections and fixed terms. No Congress can be dissolved by Democrats or Republicans. Not because the president doesn't like them, and not because the leaders of Congress think their party will do well if they have an election immediately.

The elections for the 119th Congress have been scheduled for Tues Nov 5 2024 since the elections were fixed to the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. The term for those elected to the house will run Jan 3 2025 to Jan 3 2027 as was fixed by the 20th amendment was ratified in 1933.

Currently the elections for the 169th Congress are scheduled for Tues Nov 7 2124 for a term running from Jan 3 2125 to Jan 3 2127.

The party on the right wins and he dissolves parliament in the hopes he can retain power.

In fact, the right has won in some very big places in Europe.

Will the US follow suit? I hope so.
it is the epitome of election denying - the population votes the leftist leader out of office - so the leftist leader dissolves the parliament in the hopes he can retain power.

What would it be called in the US - the vote is for the Presidents opponent and in response he dissolves congress to force another vote - attempting to retain power.

In the United States many trumpers called it a tour of our Capitol. The rest of us call it an insurrection.

In countries where elected leaders (presidents or prime ministers) have to power to set the date of elections in some fashion, it is perfectly normal. Just a couple weeks ago, the rain-soaked PM of GB declared the parliament he leads to be dissolved and set a new election earlier than required under British law. He did so because he thought it would be more advantageous to his party to have an election in July rather than later. (In early polling, his party is toying with third party status. I'm not sure earlier or later would have made much difference.)

It's a dumb system, but it is their system. (We have our own dumb things, like the EC.)

A blatant violation of the Constitution. Congress would laugh, ignore that President, keep meeting, and then probably impeach him for violating the Constitution.

Sooo pretty much what Trump tried to do after his loss?

None of this describes what happened. Macron only dissolved the lower house (comparable to our House of Representatives), and it wasn't after he was voted out. He wasn't voted out. Your AP article even says he has three years left in his term.

The election that triggered this was for the EU parliament, not the French parliament.

I don't understand what his strategy is in calling for new elections, but it wasn't to retain his seat.

It would be called January 6, 2021.

Oh, when did Trump dissolve congress? In what reality did he do that?

What was your point in starting this thread? There doesn’t seem to be any coherent discussion going on here.

Oh, when did Trump dissolve congress? In what reality did he do that?
He didn't dissolve congress. He tried to recruit fake electors to submit fraudulent votes to congress.

But unlike Macron's maneuver, Trump's actually was done in pursuit of retaining his seat after losing an election.

What was your point in starting this thread? There doesn’t seem to be any coherent discussion going on here.
Maybe he wanted to challenge us to see how many errors we'd be willing to correct before getting frustrated.

Some help please - Your link states:

Should a governor be prohibited from using their veto powers to create or increase a tax or fee? That’s the question Wisconsin Republicans want to ask voters as part of an effort to change the state’s constitution.
How on earth does that correlate to the leader of a country disbanding parliament to remain in power?

I’m still trying to figure out what any of this has to do with American politics or president Biden.

It is a case of using their power to limit the power of the opposing party.

You could also try explaining the purpose of your thread.

Just a suggestion.
The purpose of the thread is to discuss the question in the op.

The whole purpose of the politics for him is to discuss things quoted in the OP.

This thread is no different. I’m sorry if it confused you and hope that that clarifies the exact purpose of this threat once again is to discuss the question that stated in the OP.

Well, OK, I just don’t make the correlation.

To me, it’s like comparing the business practices of Walmart in the US with say Target, and then using your corner store not giving the employees free chips with their meals as an example. In my humble opinion, it doesn’t relate, but thank you for replying.
