  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Recently a team of scientists announced they had made artificial sperm from human bone marrow, and media reports abounded with the dire news that [men] had been rendered unnecessary.

If a woman chose to do so, speculated tabloid journalists, she could make sperm from her own bone marrow, fertilize another woman’s egg — and voila!

If men are deemed irrelevant by women, will we finally get to play golf and smoke stogies without getting harped on? Makes me love science, if that's the case.

Somehow, they'll still find a man to sue for child support

They'll still need us to build buildings, invent things, and squash bugs for them.

Funny, my girlfriend squashes things for me. My friends mom is an automechanic. And while female construction workers are rare, that may be more because of the hostile enviroment then lack of ability. If they didn't need or have men there probably would be a lot more female construction workers.

[wash my mouth][wash my mouth][wash my mouth] they are phasing us out!!!!!! /sarcasm

Show me a single society. Anywhere. Anytime.... that has made a significant contribution to the advancement of mankind and in which the majority of that contribution has been made by women. Particularly by women acting on their own.

OK.
The above line was typed in a bit of a hurry, but I wanted to make the point that society is not made by men OR women , but by men AND women.

It's also been pointed out that the best way to keep children out of poverty, and out of jail when they get bigger, is for their mother to marry their father and stay married to him.

I've seen families in which father is reduced to an irrelevancy, or inferior status. It ALWAYS results in problems.

Theoretical possibilities are all very well, but human nature does not change as easily or quickly as you would like to think.

Reminds me of a Philip K. Dick novel--A Scanner Darkly. PKD has the same female character in several books. Young, very bright, but a hustler always running some amazingly convoluted con nobody knows about. She calls up the guys (who aren't doing so well mentally) all upset because there is a huge bug in her bathtub.

They come over, kill it and tell her it was nothing, just a harmless little whatever. She says:

"If I had known it was harmless, I would have killed it myself"

Think I better relate this to the OP. . .so the story shows they need us.

Just in case the bug isn't harmless.

Women have their role in society. Rather than seeking ways to make men obsolete in the reproduction area, they should find their role and be content in it.

Don't think so. This scenario reminds me of a book: Sex and the High Command by John Boyd. Of course the author simplified things, the men where sexist and the women where either inscrutable or stereotypical. But I think if women do find themselves without men, I think enough of them do well enough to get by.

Sexist much?

Nope, just a realist.

Funny, my girlfriend squashes things for me. My friends mom is an automechanic. And while female construction workers are rare, that may be more because of the hostile enviroment then lack of ability. If they didn't need or have men there probably would be a lot more female construction workers.

Thus, they lack the ability (and/or will) to survive in such a hostile environment.

I fail to see how this logically follows my comment. Because men can be dicks to women in some fields that men dominate, women lack the ability to survive in that enviroment?

The pressure on the women to leave is outside any of the difficulties the men face, so it hardly follows that they are worse because less of them choose to put up with that kind of crap.

But who will start wars? Or run evil corporations? Or have coup de tats and run countries into the ground? Or intitiate genocides? We need men! They're responsible for most evil in the world!

If you think that's not true, name one female who has started a war, and I'll name ten men who have. For every female dictator, I will name ten men. For every genocide started by wome, I will name ten men.

E.g.: Joan of Arc (started a war)
Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Pol Pot, Mao Tze Tung, Ghengis Khan, Frederick Barbarossa, Charlemange, Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor Justinian, George W. Bush.

Will Science Render Men Unnecessary?

I hope not :sigh:

Great for lesbians and those who can't have children but i hope men never become unnecassary. :)

Sad that some people might want that to happen.
Given that 90% of the world's women are heterosexual I really doubt any one will attempt to use this technology to phase out males. Seriously, if you ask a woman to choose between having a child to some woman they are not attracted to via an expensive, painful and possibly unreliable medical technique or by having unprotected sex with a man they are attracted to, which sounds more appealing.

Personally I think this technology is a fantastic thing. Approximately 5% of the population is lesbians, well, now they can have children with their partners. I'd love for my sister to actually have a child with my sister in law, not some donor.

Also, I won't name names, but could some of you lay off the misogyny, it just makes you look like a cave man.

[sarcasm]Yes, that's why during WWII and other such wars, the country completely fell apart and absolutely nothing got built.[/sarcasm]

WWII is a great example of what happens when there are no men, women have stepped into the roles of men and become construction workers, have built planes and tanks, and have produced enough to enable the men to win the war.

I think this thread has answered the question of who on this board is sexist.
