  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

(CNN) -- If you're following the news about ISIS, which now calls itself the Islamic State, you might think you've mistakenly clicked on a historical story about barbarians from millennia ago.

In a matter of months, the group seized territory in both Iraq and Syria and declared an Islamic caliphate, celebrating its own shocking slaughter along the way.

"I don't see any attention from the rest of the world," a member of the Yazidi minority in Iraq told the New Yorker. "In one day, they killed more than two thousand Yazidi in Sinjar, and the whole world says, 'Save Gaza, save Gaza.'"

In Syria, the group hoisted some of its victims severed heads on poles. One of the latest videos of the savagery shows a Christian man forced to his knees, surrounded by masked militants, identified in the video as members of ISIS. They force the man at gunpoint to "convert" to Islam. Then, the group beheads him...

Please pray for the persecuted and for the salvation of the lost souls who persecute and kill them.

Lord, have mercy!

Hyperbole for the win.

Frankly- I don't appreciate your attitude regarding a real issue. Perhaps you could join us in prayer instead of posting disparaging one liners. ISIS is clearly a problem. Do you think CNN is exaggerating and making false claims?

Not exaggerated, exactly. Over emphasising the importance of, certainly. ISIS are brutal and barbaric, no one denies this. But in terms of global importance they're very, very, minor.

Of course I do pray for those affected by the horror.

What would Jesus do? What would the apostles do? Did they fight against their enemies? No.
.....
Hebrew 10 & 11
32 Think back on those early days when you first learned about Christ.[j] Remember how you remained faithful even though it meant terrible suffering. 33 Sometimes you were exposed to public ridicule and were beaten, and sometimes you helped others who were suffering the same things. 34 You suffered along with those who were thrown into jail, and when all you owned was taken from you, you accepted it with joy. You knew there were better things waiting for you that will last forever.

But others were tortured, refusing to turn from God in order to be set free. They placed their hope in a better life after the resurrection. 36 Some were jeered at, and their backs were cut open with whips. Others were chained in prisons. 37 Some died by stoning, some were sawed in half,[d] and others were killed with the sword. Some went about wearing skins of sheep and goats, destitute and oppressed and mistreated. 38 They were too good for this world, wandering over deserts and mountains, hiding in caves and holes in the ground.

1peter 4
12 Dear friends, don’t be surprised at the fiery trials you are going through, as if something strange were happening to you. 13 Instead, be very glad—for these trials make you partners with Christ in his suffering, so that you will have the wonderful joy of seeing his glory when it is revealed to all the world.

14 If you are insulted because you bear the name of Christ, you will be blessed, for the glorious Spirit of God[e] rests upon you.[f] 15 If you suffer, however, it must not be for murder, stealing, making trouble, or prying into other people’s affairs. 16 But it is no shame to suffer for being a Christian. Praise God for the privilege of being called by his name! 17 For the time has come for judgment, and it must begin with God’s household. And if judgment begins with us, what terrible fate awaits those who have never obeyed God’s Good News? 18 And also,

“If the righteous are barely saved,
what will happen to godless sinners?”[g]
19 So if you are suffering in a manner that pleases God, keep on doing what is right, and trust your lives to the God who created you, for he will never fail you.

On a practical note people can take to the street, hand out leaflets, engage the public and raise awareness of the very real threat of Isis....but the apathy from fellow Christians in the UK is astonishing....we get more Jewish people standing with us against the persecution of Christians and minority groups in Syria and Iraq, than we do from the Churches.

As for just allowing these savages to continue their blood-fest unchallenged...that is utterly unacceptable...in fact all people are obligated to stand up against this evil and defend their lands and their people. The passages from Hebrews, 1 Peter and Revelations are not to do with war but with what happens to Christians who are in the power of the enemy and can do nothings about it....much of what they suffered being at the hands of the Romans and their own people and from a direct result of being a witness or preaching the Gospel.

When the L-rd returns, He will be the Lion of Judea and many many people are going to be slaughtered.

Rev 19: 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sat on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.12His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; and He has a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself.13He is clothed with a robe dipped in blood, and His name is called The Word of God.14And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.15From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.16And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

17Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out with a loud voice, saying to all the birds which fly in midheaven, “Come, assemble for the great supper of God,18so that you may eat the flesh of kings and the flesh of commanders and the flesh of mighty men and the flesh of horses and of those who sit on them and the flesh of all men, both free men and slaves, and small and great.”
19And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies assembled to make war against Him who sat on the horse and against His army.

Doom of the Beast and False Prophet

20And the beast was seized, and with him the false prophet who performed the signs in his presence, by which he deceived those who had received the mark of the beast and those who worshiped his image; these two were thrown alive into the lake of fire which burns with brimstone.21And the rest were killed with the sword which came from the mouth of Him who sat on the horse, and all the birds were filled with their flesh.

Hi zeek, Jesus and the apostles never speak of war, or to attack our enemies they teach the extreme opposite....God will be our vengeance.

Christians can do much by praying, joining missions in that part of the world, give to organizations they help feed, clothe and more our brothers and sisters in Christ.

We are to love our enemy, pray for them,... Jesus and the apostles tell us to respond to evil in the ways our sinful instinct can not understand, but when we live by the spirit we can do the impossible.

I do not believe the NT teaches it is wrong to protect yourself and family, but to escape, and then plan vengeance is wrong. Those in protective forces are to bring evil to justice.
.............

Ephesians 6

10 A final word: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil. 12 For we[d] are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.

13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm. 14 Stand your ground, putting on the belt of truth and the body armor of God’s righteousness. 15 For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully prepared.[e] 16 In addition to all of these, hold up the shield of faith to stop the fiery arrows of the devil.[f] 17 Put on salvation as your helmet, and take the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Matthew 5
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[a] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

Hi zeek, Jesus and the apostles never speak of war, or to attack our enemies they teach the extreme opposite....God will be our vengeance.

The quote 'vengeance is mine says the L-rd' comes from the Old Covenant initially, but like everything there is a context...and during those times warfare was a part of life, often initiated by the L-rd of Hosts.

Christians can do much by praying, joining missions in that part of the world, give to organizations they help feed, clothe and more our brothers and sisters in Christ.

Agreed...and this should be going on continuously.

We are to love our enemy, pray for them,... Jesus and the apostles tell us to respond to evil in the ways our sinful instinct can not understand, but when we live by the spirit we can do the impossible.

Agreed as well...within the context of being physically powerless to do anything about things.

I do not believe the NT teaches it is wrong to protect yourself and family, but to escape, and then plan vengeance is wrong. Those in protective forces are to bring evil to justice.

There are many solid Christian believers in the armed forces of our nations, and they must have come to the conclusion that it is right to fight for and defend your country....the difference is that they are people who pray and seek G-d in the midst of conflict and try to apply moral standards to warfare.

Thankfully the United States is doing air strikes in Iraq at this time. President Obama has vowed to defeat ISIS and I am grateful for that. Hopefully the air strikes will be enough to defeat ISIS but I fear they won't be. I am afraid there will need to be "boots on the ground" as well.

Since they're sitting on rich oilfields, I have to disagree with that statement.
