  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Being she died in 2004, she did not live though all the contaminated meat scares we know of today. Things were different back then. I have never eaten raw hamburger, but I didn't think anything about cracking a raw egg in a glass with some ice cream and using it for a homemade protein shake, back in the day. I did not prefer it, but if a hamburger was raw in the middle, I did not worry about it. In the last century, I would have just ate it.

There are ways to do that where it’s safe. I’ve had tartare which is more or less the same thing. But if I’m checking the seasoning at home, I’ll put a tiny bit in the microwave and taste it cooked.

Well, my mom was of her generation, and she knew better than that.

My wife was a home care worker. One client would sometimes phone and request that she stop at her sons butcher shop for fresh hamburger on her way over. She ate it raw with a little salt and pepper.

My wife is a Milwaukee native. An old holiday tradition up there is the "cannibal" sandwich. Raw ground beef, served open-faced on buttered rye bread with sliced onions, and salt and pepper. I was very skeptical. I grew up in the south, where we cooked the heck out of everything. My wife and I always spend Christmas week in WI with her sisters, and they serve it on Christmas Eve. I'm polite, and have one cannibal sandwich. Raw ground beef (her family only buys high quality sirloin) is actually pretty bland. And I was almost thrown out of the house when I doused my sandwich with sriracha sauce. But I can eat it only if it's kicked up in some way.

Oh my, someone talking about the good old days and the year 2004 in the same paragraph makes me feel old :(

I had a colleague from Germany who served this at a Christmas party. He said it was traditional German meal. I had some, because I thought surely whatever that thing is that looked like a roll with raw ground meat and some onion on top must be something else. It tasted pretty good though, but I kind of lost my appetite when I learned what it was. Which doesn't really make sense since I have no problem eating sushi...

Speaking of raw fish, one of the most bizarre foods has to be fugu. The raw puffer fish that's a highly prized, and very expensive delicacy in Japan. Even though a few people die from tetrodotoxin poisoning every so often. Supposedly, the best fugu retains just a bit of the toxin. Part of the experience is your mouth feeling numb and tingly. I'm fairly adventurous when it comes to food. But if I ever get to Japan, that's one meal I'll pass on.

The video shows a skilled fugu chef at work. It's kinda long (15 min.) and not for the squeamish. The fish is alive as it's being prepared. But I suppose doing it properly is an art. Not just butchery.

Nobody has died from properly prepared fugu in decades. Any poisonings have been from unschooled people doing this at home and botching the job.

If you want a really bizarre food, research ikezukuri. That's a preparation technique where the food is still alive when you serve it.

This sort of thing is called a Mettbrötchen, with Mett being the ground meat and Brötchen meaning roll. Mett isn't just ground meat, it has to be prepared very hygienically and must be eaten soon, ideally on the day it was made, for obvious reasons. In german supermarkets ground beef often comes with an express warning not to eat it raw.
