  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Hi Everyone!
I love wild cats! Does anyone else?

Sister in Christ,
Amy

Yes, I love wild cats, they are also called feral cats. I was involved in the feral cat trap, spay/neuter and release program in my area for many years. These cats are a direct result of people not spaying and neutering their pets so it is our responsibility as a society to take care of them and the answer is not euthanasia. They are a very misunderstood part of the animal kingdom.

BTW A true feral cat has not had contact with people and is truly wild. There are other cats who have been with people and have reverted back to the wild because of being abandoned or lost. These cats can be domesticated again. Many people believe that because a feral cat is a desendant of tame cats that they also can be tamed this is not true. There has been some degree of success with kittens but if they do not bond with a human within weeks of birth they are very difficult to tame just as any wild animal. I have had feral cats become use to me being around and would let me pet them briefly on their terms but I took care of them since they were kittens. I never "tamed them".

I will get off my soapbox now, thank you Amy for posting this.

Unfortunately, my neighborhood is overrun with feral cats. I just got my live trap, and I'm going to be trapping them and taking them to the shelter. They have killed off much of the local small wildlife in the area--they just took down the last of the baby squirrels that were born in my front yard tree today. They are incredibly destructive and I'll be quite glad to see them go. No more cats in the garbage, no more yowling and squalling when I try to sleep, no more cat mess in my flower beds. Hopefully, the birds will be able to nest now. Maybe I'll be able to sleep with my windows open again.

These problems all started out from people letting their cats overbreed. It amazes me that people don't have their cats fixed and don't keep them indoors when they live in town. They get put down my the thousands at the pounds.

If you mean ferals...I feel just awful for them.

If you mean lions and tigers...I think they are very cool and I want one. I know I could never give it what it needs...so I cant have one, but I still think it would be very cool.

If you mean wild/domestic crosses, like bengals or savannahs or pixie-bobs, I love those too and we have a cat who is part bengal.

Welcome midnightbirdgirl! Just a suggestion, there might be a feral cat spay and neuter program in your area. They might capture the cats have them spayed or neutered then if possible release them into a managed colony. It depends on where you live but I would start with just calling the local animal shelters and asking them. The cats would be happier and so would you plus no more unwanted homeless kittens. It's worth a try. I am glad you are one of the enlightened people and put the blame where it belongs on us humans! God Bless

Nope, been there done that. Sadly, no program like that here. Animal control will only rent you the traps so they can euthanasize them. So, right now I just leave them alone.:sigh:

Feral cats really do need to be taken of some way, and yes, the ex-owners are the ones to blame... it just isn't the cats' fault... one lady down here goes down to feed them, but that isn't the answer either. . . they need to be fixed! and fed...

Well, large wild cats, Jaguars, Tigers, Lions, and those kind are awesome, but at a distance, of course :p ... I love the white tigers, and such.

Feral cats turn people into cat haters! They tear open trash bags, and I had a neighbor who was an avid gardener and she had beautiful flowers,a beautiful yard and could not even enjoy sitting out on her porch because of the putrid smell from all the feral cats that used her flower beds as their litterbox! Plus we all despise being woken by their caterwauling when mating! They are nothing but pests! I wish there was someway to fine every dog & cat owner who does not have their pets altered, and breeders strictly regulated.

Now the true wild cats are awesome!
