• Starting today August 7th, 2024, in order to post in the Married Couples, Courting Couples, or Singles forums, you will not be allowed to post if you have your Marital status designated as private. Announcements will be made in the respective forums as well but please note that if yours is currently listed as Private, you will need to submit a ticket in the Support Area to have yours changed.

  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Wikileaks and Julian Assange

What are your thoughts on Wikileaks?

  • The site should be shut down, Assange should be sent to Gitmo, if not outright killed, for treason.

  • Wikileaks provides an extra level of scrutiny and oversight.

  • Some stuff they publish the public has a right to know, but some of it should stay secret.

Unarmed civilians shouldn't threaten attack helicopters and then complain when they are shot at.

That's right the very fact that a civilian moves makes them a potential target to be shot at. If an attack helicopter flies near you the best possible thing that you can do is lay perfectly flat face down on the ground. In any other circumstances a civilian looks suspicious and US soldiers have every right to shoot them without any hesitation.

Except that the wikileaks video, in addition to opening itself up for quote mining, out of context propaganda purposes, also makes individual soldiers potential targets, as well as providing military inteligence and insight into our military doctrine and operating procedures.

The GZ mosque fiasco also opens itself to quote-mining and out-of-context propaganda, which can used for recruitment of radicals. And yet you don't consider the GZ mosque protestors as 'traitors to America' worthy of the penalty it merits? Much of what you post reeks of double-standards.

No double standard at all. Stealing secrets and providing them to foreign powers is treason. The Ground Zero mosque protesters have done nothe=ing remotely like that.

Of course there is a huge double-standard on your part. Firstly, you suggested that a non-American could be considered guilty of 'treason' to the US and tried under US law for the crime, but that an American doing exactly the same thing with French secrets shouldn't be tried for 'treason' by the French because he is not subject to French law. Secondly, you claimed that the Wikileaks video could be used for propaganda purposes to recruit terrorists, and that it was therefore wrong for Wikileaks to publish it. However, even though the whole GZ mosque controversy could also be used for the same purposes, you don't reach the same conclusion, even though internal consistency would compel you to do so. Double-standards.

Video of the GZ mosque was not a classified military document. Chalk and cheese.

But both can be twisted and used for terrorist recruitment purposes. And yet you treat one group of people differently to others.
We're talking about the person who posted the video on the web, not the people in them.

I'd like to participate in this thread, but Hans Talhoffer's arguments are very depressing to me. If we agree with the founding fathers that it's the duty of a patriot to protect his country from its government, then we should support a group like Wikileaks that tries to tell the truth about the wrong things our government does.

Because we're talking about America. Do keep up.

Then shouldn't you have worded a bit differently: "LOL Austrians can't be American patriots!", instead of "LOL Austrians can't be patriots!"?

And weren't you talking about Australians, not Austrians, anyway?

Or do I know your mother tongue better than you? :)

The internet is American, so it was implied.

Why not try to address the problems revealed and put the ones responsible at trial, or at the very least kick their sorry corrupt hind-sides out of government.

True.

I don't see how certain people can be taken seriously - as far as their integrity goes - as long as they merely attack WikiLeaks, without addressing the corruption revealed at all. No matter how much flag-waving they practice to accompany their verbal assaults. Propaganda is always just propaganda. Illusion of national grandeur is always just illusion of national grandeur.

At moments like these I can say I'm glad to live in a country with one of the very lowest government corruption rates in the world.
