This is normal in the Catholic and Orthodox Churches. When a married man is ordained (priest or deacon) then his marriage remains intact. When/if his wife dies, he usually will continue his ministry to the Lord. However, if he has children that are not yet adult, he should remarry, and his bishop will laicize him. He is not able to continue on in his service.
