  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I confused about the differences between Wide Screen and Full Screen movies. What's the differences? If I'm going to buy a DVD, which version should I buy? I want to see all of the movie, with nothing cut out from the sides.

Wide Screen is the way the movie was shown in the theater. Theaters use rectangular screens (Wide Screens) so that the most people can see it. However, since most people's TV's have square screens, it doesn't fill the whole screen. You're still seeing the whole movie, just in the original rectagular format. If you are bothered by the black bars, then get a Full Screen version, as it is formatted for square TVs. :)

If you don't want to have anything cut off at the sides, go with widescreen. You'll have to contend with the "black bars" on the screen, though.

FTR, I always go wide-screen!
That's exactly what I do. Wide screen ftw!

Widescreen. However, if the black bars bother you, then I suppose you aughta go with fullscreen. It's just that you really get the "full" picture with widescreen, believe it or not. I could try and explain how it works, but I'd only confuse you, including myself probably. Afterall, what do I know of these things. Lol. I just know widescreen is much better.

Widescreen.

In fullscreen, sometimes the camera movements and certain angles gets lost. Watch Contempt in both versions and see the big difference.

Yes, something like that. :p

the only time fullscreen works is when watching TV shows on DVD.

i've watched "The Two Towers" (if anyone remembers it) on DVD (wide and full) and the difference was suprising. like not being able to see the sides and what's happening there.

It is absolutely always widescreen for me. I have even been known to exchange DVDs I have received as gifts for the widescreen version of the same movie if the person who gave it to me bought the full screen one instead!

Here are some other websites about widescreen vs. full screen, and they include pictures from movies that really show you the difference in the image you are receiving:

http://www.widescreen.org/examples/starwars/index.shtmlhttp://www.starwars.com/episode-ii/release/video/f20020925/index.html

Very difficult for me to understand how anyone would prefer full screen over widescreen, especially when you really see exactly how much image is cut off in fullscreen! It totally ruins the intent of the filmmakers...plus, sometimes in order to show the whole image, camera angles and movements are distorted or forced, so it makes it look very weird! To each his own, I suppose, though....for me, widescreen everytime and only!!!

A very useful informational tool:

http://www.widescreen.org.

Although that site is very informative, it's also a little off-putting.

"Artist's rights"? Puh-lease. If I sell you one of my paintings, do I have any right to tell you how to frame it?

I always buy widescreen and I recommed buying wide screen, too. All new TVs are widescreen, so in a few years if you replace your TV, it'll be nice to have the widescreen movies and not have the full screen ones where footage is chopped off. This was my rationale for buying widescreen DVDs, and I'm glad I did now that I have a widescreen TV.

I always go for wide screen. A great example of the difference was shown in the last DVD release of Disney's Sleeping Beauty. One of the extras on that DVD put both versions up on the same screen (obviously, they were quite small). This showed you just how much you miss in the full screen version!
