CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I would have to ask you, can you name any scholar who would dare use the KJV. I can't think of any scholar over the past 20 years who has published a book with the KJV text, I doubt if any of the major publishers would allow such a thing to happen as it would heavily affect their sales.
The once venerable KJV has long stopped being a credible version for serious study and it would be a game (foolhardy) academic in my opinion who would dare go this way. I know that I would not bother purchasing or even reading a book that used the KJV.

I personally use many different version of the Holy Bible to study with including the KJV. But mostly when I study I like to go to the original greek and hebrew texts. It sometimes helps to see how someone else interpreted certain verses even if they weren't correct about how they interpreted it. It keeps me from getting one certain mindset about a verse so that I can see it more clearly.
The way the scriptures have been interpreted in many of the texts we use is one reason that non-christians say that the Bible contradicts itself when it doesn't.
If you truely want to understand what God is saying you really need to study it for yourself. Once someone believes a verse says a certain thing then it is hard for them to teach on that verse objectively. Researching it for yourself can eliminate that problem.

Very true indeed. What never fails to amaze me, is when I come across material in a Bible commentary on a given verse that not only points out where I had it wrong, but I am often stumped as to why I believed something that was not only wrong but illogical in the first place.
As much as I always hate to admit it, I know that I am just as prone to uncritically accepting a faulty premise as anyone else is; it seems that whenever we hear something over and over that our mind simply accepts it as being a fact.

I also don't think that scholars use the KJV in any large numbers, at beast I'd say the read it as they might read any other of the Bible translations out there. It doesn't make sense to me to think a translation that was made 400 yrs ago is the best after all the scholarship that has gone into languages of the Bible and original manuscripts and to think that hasn't improved our modern day translations. Then there is now much American English has changed from Britain English of the 1600s. Well, actually there have been updates to the KJV thru the years, so the says it wasn't the best from the beginning.

Scholars have usually studied ancient Greek, Hebrew, Aramaic, and/or Latin. Theologians writing would be more likely to quote from original texts. There are of course scholars who quote from their favorite versions, or a mixture.
Copyright agreements with many Bible publishers allow for no more than 20% of a page content quoted, so contemporary scholars benefit from mixing it up.

What often happens is that Bible publishers will give permission for the better known academics to use their translations as they please and those who specialise in Greek (such as Gordon Fee) they will be allowed to change the text in places where they disagree. Most publishers seem to be a bit reticent with unduly upsetting the 'heavy weight' scholars.
