Is there some context in which this question was asked such as the philosophical issues being discussed before the exam?
Or if the test just said "Why?" with no apparent rhyme or reason, I would wager your professor is a pretentious blowhard who likes to ask cryptic questions in an attempt to appear "deep". That or the printer screwed up and cut off the rest of the question.
