Pnkr4Christ said:Well, I understand what JesusWasn'tWhite is saying, but from what I have read I haven't seen any of that happening. It seems more like people are praising secular bands and artists.
Not feeling conviction from Christian artists, but you do from secular artists? What type of conviction do you feel from listening to secular artists?

Pnkr4Christ said:Oh well, I guess I'm not getting my point through.
Okay, let me just clear up a common misconception among Christians. There once was man named Plato. He was a Greek philosopher and he wrote alot of socratic dialogues and taught Aristotle. He also made a claim that there are sacred and secular aspects of life. The sacred has to do with the spiritual and the secular has to do with the physical. This Greek philosophy worked it's way into the early church, which developed into a belief called gnosticism. Gnosticism mixes Christianity with Greek philosophy and claims that not only is there a distinction between sacred and secular, but that the sacred is greater than the secular. 1 John was written to combat the spread of gnosticism in the church.
So what does this have to do with secular music? Well, in this thread, I have seen some people saying that they are disappointed that Christians are listening to secular music. I just want to point out that this view is rooted more in greek philosophy and gnosticism than scripture. Plato's idea of there being a distinction between sacred and secular is not wrong, but to say that God is only glorified in the sacred and not the secular is heresy. God created one universe, not a sacred and secular universe. God is sovereign over that one universe, to say that He cannot be glorified in the secular is placing a limit on God's sovereignty.
It doesn't matter if a secular band is using their musical gifts that God has given them to write songs about girls, faith, or turtles, so long as they use His gifts God is glorified in it just as He is glorified when a chef who is a secular uses his gifts to make the best seafood entree that he can (Even if that person had no intention of glorifying God with his creation [see Meat Sacrificed to Idols]). God is glorified in both the sacred and the secular. God created music and God created language and "everything created by God is good and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer." (1 Timothy 4:4-5)
