A local witch in a small village was sabotaged by the villagers for her wicked ways, by having her broomstick secretly switched with one taken from the local chancelry, whereupon she crashed into the sea right after take-off. The vile hag swam to shore and returned strewn with strands of seaweed, and entered her hut on the edge of the village, and began conjuring potions containing quicklime, prompting the proverb; 'A witch in brine saves lime'.
