  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why Was Clement Epistle Excluded From the Canon?

a safe place, I understand.

There is no safety in numbers.

Proverbs 11:21-23 King James Version (KJV)
21 Though hand join in hand, the wicked shall not be unpunished: but the seed of the righteous shall be delivered.

I think I see your argument that inspiration comes from God and was focused on the Scripture writers, which makes the writings inspired from the beginning. We can both recognize that fact; but Jesus said that he would send the Holy Spirit and that the Spirit would guide us to the truth. So the early church prayed for the Spirit to guide them in the books chosen. One of the criteria that they settled upon was that the book had to be universally accepted, which is why Clement did not make the canon and why an argumentum ad populum was actually used. It doesn't prove inspiration; but it does show consensus in what the Spirit guided the people to recognize as truth. The converse theory would be that nearly the entire church fell into error early on and selected the wrong books. That seems to be the Bart Ehrman crowd's theory on why their pet books did not make the list.

Because Clement wasn't an Apostle. He was not one of the 12, he was not Paul, and he was not one of the 70.

The Church read publicly those writings which were given to us by the Apostles. During their debates about the canon of the New Testament, the church debated which books were genuinely Apostolic. That was the extent of those debates.

There are NO criteria given in Scripture for the contents of the canon of the New Testament.

Yes, there are many others, but this thread is about the New Testament.

no, it about why Clement's letter wasnt included.

You have some personal thoughts and reasons, which is great. But how do we know they are correct without confirmation from scripture?

ok, your personal reasons (or someone else's reasons you agree with) then are not confirmed by scripture.
That's not what Scripture is, and I am will not be subject to arbitrary Reformational standards.
