When Joseph was in prison, he interpreted the dreams of two fellow inmates, who were Pharaoh's officials. They were Pharaoh's chief butler and chief baker.

The dream of the chief butler was this:
“Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.” (Genesis 40:9-11)
Joseph interpreted his dream to mean this:
“The three branches are three days. Now within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your place, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler." (Genesis 40:12-13)
The dream of the chief baker was this:
“I also was in my dream, and there were three white baskets on my head. In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head.” (Genesis 40:16-17)
Joseph interpreted his dream to mean this:
“The three baskets are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you.” (Genesis 40:18-19)
And it happened just as Joseph had told them:
Genesis 40:20-22
20 Now it came to pass on the third day, which was Pharaoh’s birthday, that he made a feast for all his servants; and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and of the chief baker among his servants.
21 Then he restored the chief butler to his butlership again, and he placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand.
22 But he hanged the chief baker, as Joseph had interpreted to them.
So why was the chief butler saved and the chief baker hanged?

What is the Revelation here?

The chief butler's dream speaks of the redemptive work of Christ. He saw a grape vine. That is a symbol of Christ. Jesus said, "I am the vine." (John 15:5) The vine produced grapes and in his dream, the chief butler took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh's cup. That is a picture of Christ suffering and shedding His blood for our sins. He was crushed for our iniquities. (Isaiah 53:5) He died our death so that we could live. That the vine budded, blossomed and brought forth fruit speaks of Jesus' willingness to go to the cross for us, for He said, "I lay down My life for the sheep." (John 10:15)

On the other hand, the chief baker's dream speaks of his efforts to be justified by his own works. The "all kinds of baked goods" symbolises all types of dead works done by his arm of flesh to earn salvation.

The Bible says thatcursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength. (Jeremiah 17:5) His works were also a "bloodless sacrifice". Without the shedding of blood, there can be no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22). Worse, the baked goods were probably leavened. Leaven in the Bible speaks of sin and erroneous doctrines(Matthew 16:12) So even his works were tainted with sin and a faulty understanding of salvation. Finally, that the baskets were on his head speaks of his reliance on his intelligence, another indication that he was trusting in his smarts, his own strength.

So the chief butler lived because he was justified by the blood and work of Christ. The chief baker died because no one can be justified by his own works.
Galatians 2:16
16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.
The two dreams parallel grace and law, Spirit and flesh, faith and works - themes consistent throughout the Bible.

Interesting.

Could it also only be that Joseph interpretted these dreams, so that the cupbearer would remember Jospeh in the future in order to provide for his family when they come to egypt?

Edouard.

That made me laugh, the simplicity of it!

Actually Yes & No, Interpretation of Dreams Belonged to GOD :-

Gen 40:8 And they said to him "We each have had a dream and there is no interpreter of it." So Joseph said to them "Do not interpretations belong to God?

However i like you style, yes in this short verse there's another revelation that in whatever situation one is in, GOD will turn ALL situation that are bad (fm the Devil or men evilness) to work for the believer GOOD when we (believers in Christ) turns to HIM & He'll not only turns our situation around, HE turns it with STYLE to Prospers the believers exceedingly abundently above & beyond whatever we can think or ask of HIM so that not only we are bless, but also to be a blessings to others :amen:

Notions like GOD cause so & so to be inflicted with some life threatening sickness or make someone poor just went out the window or down the drain :amen: (Nothing-ness got nothing to bless others with)

I think you missed the point.

I never said that dream interpretations did not belong to God.
Usually, however when the dreams are interpretted. They are presented with the meaning. Example. Daniel. refers to revelations. God revealed this to him.

may God bless us all with discernment.

This a fantastic break down, I so enjoy it.

The story of Joseph, while reading it, was the first time the Holy Spirit pulled up a seat next to me and began pointing out the relevance of the story as it pertains to Jesus in the future.

Joseph needs his own thread, I believe once more people understand that not only does the bible read in black and write, it also speaks in Spirit to the believer.

The first thing that hooked me was the number 5 that used to the portion of food given to Benjaman. He received 5 times more. Gideon army correct me if I am wrong, but, doesn't 5 represent the number of Grace. Benjaman being the only true blood relative of Joseph, would that represent us as believers in Jesus? We also fall under Grace now by the blood of Jesus.

The fact that Jacobs name was changed to Isreal, yet, through out the story of Joseph both of the names were still used alternating throughout the story.

Jesus and Joseph both being sold for silver.

Jacob/Isreal, had to leave his life behind and had to move to a much better place made available through the work of Joseph.

I could go on and on, my point is, once the spiritual aspect of the Bible begins to unfold in front of you, it touches you in a whole new way. The depth is never ending.

Good stuff Gideon army, keep it up.

Hi there Dearly Beloved of our Lord's Christ Jesus Light Hearted,

Yes, 5 is the Number of Grace in Bible Numerics & it's also applicable to the Ben Gen being given/provided 5 times more clothings & generally the good earthly stuffs :amen:

Yes, you are absolutely correct that Not only is Ben BLOOD runs TRUE & Same (applicable to those whom renounce their self works/ righteousness & RECIEVED HIS Eternal Gift of Righteousness via HIS Spilled BLOOD) with Joseph hence being given MORE but Ben & Jospeh are the only Sons of Jacob/Israel (Pic/type of GOD) whom Jacob/Israel name personally as the rest of his sons are NAMED by their mothers :)

The fact that Jacobs name was changed to Isreal, yet, through out the story of Joseph both of the names were still used alternating throughout the story.

Actually Jacob name means in Hebrew 'Grabber' but GOD also prophecized that the elder (Esau) would serve the younger (Jacob) Gen 25:23However Jacob has to lied to his Daddy Isaac for the 1st born blessings Gen 27:19 But GOD wants to Bless Jacob & give jacob all HIS (GOD) Blessings effortlessly hence changed Jacob Name to Israel (Prince).

When ever Jacob is in unbelief, the Holy Spirit records his name as Jocob but when Jacob believe & walks his GOD given right as a prince, the Holy Spirit records Jacob name as Israel :)

It's not me to thank, it's all the revelations that i've heard fm New Creation Church Singapore Senior Pastor Prince sermons ;)

I absolutly agree, Joseph Prince is my favorite also. I can honestly say he is the one that freed me and my mind-set of being caught in the bondage of the law.

Ok, when Jacob was fighting with God, or a messanger of God, and Jacob insited that he be blessed before he let go. Jacob got a name change at that time. Is this due to the idea that being a "grabber" he would be considered working to obtain his blessing. With the name change he would now simply be a reciever do to the unearned favor of God?

I've also struggled to understand the relevance of it becoming daytime and the messanger had to leave.
I do see Romans 13:12 refering to day light apearing, I'm sure it all is related, just someone elses viewpoint would be appreciated.

Once I get past the meaning of these couple items I'm sure more of the depth will be revealed to me.

Thanks for all your efforts, I appreciate it very much.

Referring to this?

Gen 32:24 Then Jacob was left alone; and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day.

Gen 32:25 Now when He saw that He did not prevail against him, He touched the socket of his hip; and the socket of Jacob's hip was out of joint as He wrestled with him.

Gen 32:26 And He said, "Let Me go, for the day breaks." But he said, "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"

Your revelation is indeed correct :)

However if you are to continue reading into Gen 33 after Jacob (Grabber) name has been changed to Israel (Princely), you'll notice the following:-

Gen 33:9 But Esau said, "I have enough (Hebrew here is rab & translated to read: much, many, great) , my brother; keep what you have for yourself."

Gen 33:10 And Jacob said, "No, please, if I have now found favor in your sight, then receive my present from my hand, inasmuch as I have seen your face as though I had seen the face of God, and you were pleased with me.

Gen 33:11 "Please, take my blessing that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough (Hebrew word here is kol & translated to read: totality, everything) ." So he urged him, and he took it.

Therefore this clearly blow any notion of the christians whom doesn't have a revelation knowledge of the Scriptures to keep saying that PROVERTY is scripturual & good :D

However :-

I've also struggled to understand the relevance of it becoming daytime and the messanger had to leave.

Ok, we know that the OT is a 'Type of' the NT & the Full Revelation of the NT is hidden in the OT?

Once this part settled & compare & contrast with Gen 32 & Gen 33, you'll see that Daybreak speaks of our Christ being raised & Ability to bless more then a few when Christ walked on earth.

Furthermore we are the children of LIght & must continue to walk in HIS Light (not ours for self righteousness fm the best of us are dark filthy & dirty).

Hope this settles for you :)

Yes this settles very well with me.;)

I used to see the OT as many stories of how man rebelled against God, and God's mercy for mankind. Although it is true, through Joseph Prince I have gone deeper to see much of the spiritual meaning of the coming Messiah. I now consider it more of a physical interpertation of the spiritualness of the NT.

In other words I've read the Bible from front to back. Now I have to reread again and now I find the spiritual meaning throughout the OT.

He is an awesume God, with 1200 pages of never ending revelations.

I will look deeper into Jacob's story along with his brother with a new understanding.

Thanks again.

Dearly beloved of our Lord's & Righteousness awareness in Christ, Lighthearted,

My pleasure, maybe you'll like to check up on meanings of NAMES/ PLACES/Cities in the OT which hides many TRUTHS for the believer which is so rich with relevation knowledge that one cannot get enough.

See Jesus in every one of the stories in the OT which Christ Himself set the standards in:-

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the Prophets, He expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning Himself.

Believe you'll agree that the whole scriptures are things concerning Jesus HIMSELF & if one is to read the whole context of the above, one will find that he/she will be recharged & hearts warmed when they've seen Jesus in & thru the Scriptures hence fulfilling scriptures that we'll be transformed into HIS Image & Glory when we behold HIS GLORIES :amen:

Gideon, you took the whole article off my blog. You could at least have credited me and not take it as your own. If you're going to quote me, at least quote in full:

2011

1. Why The Butler Lived While The Baker Died

When Joseph was in prison, he interpreted the dreams of two fellow inmates, who were Pharaoh’s officials. They were Pharaoh’s chief butler and chief baker. The dream of the chief butler was this:

“Behold, in my dream a vine was before me, and in the vine were three branches; it was as though it budded, its blossoms shot forth, and its clusters brought forth ripe grapes. Then Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes and pressed them into Pharaoh’s cup, and placed the cup in Pharaoh’s hand” (Genesis 40:9–11).

Joseph interpreted his dream to mean this:

“The three branches are three days. Now within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head and restore you to your place, and you will put Pharaoh’s cup in his hand according to the former manner, when you were his butler” (Genesis 40:12–13).

The dream of the chief baker was this:

“I also was in my dream, and there were three white baskets on my head. In the uppermost basket were all kinds of baked goods for Pharaoh, and the birds ate them out of the basket on my head” (Genesis 40:16–17).

Joseph interpreted his dream to mean this:

“The three baskets are three days. Within three days Pharaoh will lift off your head from you and hang you on a tree; and the birds will eat your flesh from you” (Genesis 40:18–19).

And it happened just as Joseph had told them. Pharaoh let the chief butler live but the chief baker he hanged. Why was this so?

Christ Unveiled

The chief butler’s dream speaks of the redemptive work of Christ. He saw a grape vine. That is a symbol of Christ. Jesus said, “I am the vine” (John 15:5). The vine produced grapes and in his dream, the chief butler took the grapes and squeezed them into Pharaoh’s cup. This is a picture of Christ suffering and shedding His blood for our sins. He was crushed for our iniquities (Isaiah 53:5). He willingly went to the cross for us, for He said, “I lay down My life for the sheep” (John 10:15). He died our death so that we could live. That the vine budded, blossomed and brought forth fruit speaks of Jesus’ growth from childhood to an amazing public ministry marked by signs and wonders.

On the other hand, the chief baker’s dream speaks of his efforts to be justified by his own works. The “all kinds of baked goods” symbolizes all types of dead works done by his arm of flesh to earn salvation. The Bible says that cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength (Jeremiah 17:5). His works were also a “bloodless sacrifice.” Without the shedding of blood, there can be no remission of sins (Hebrews 9:22). Worse, the baked goods were probably leavened. Leaven in the Bible speaks of sin and erroneous doctrines (Matthew 16:12). So even his works were tainted with sin and a faulty understanding of salvation. Finally, that the baskets were on his head speaks of his reliance on his intelligence, another indication that he was trusting in his smarts, his own strength.

So the chief butler lived because he was justified by the blood and work of Christ. The chief baker died because no man can be justified by his own works.

Galatians 2:16
knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

The two dreams parallel grace and law, Spirit and flesh, faith and works—themes consistent throughout the Bible. They also parallel the offerings of Cain and Abel. Like the baker’s offering, Cain’s offering of the produce of the ground was not only bloodless, but it also spoke of his own works. On the other hand, like the butler’s offering, Abel’s offering of the firstborn of his flock was a blood sacrifice that spoke of the sacrifice of Jesus, the true Lamb of God—the only sacrifice that God accepts!

If you read when Jacob was wrestling with God and he asked for a blessing. God asked what his name was. God knew who he was but the last time Jacob asked for a blessing he lied about his name saying it was Esau.
