• CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

If a person on a island in the middle of the ocean lived a good life in his tribe and helped many people and saved many lives die while never having the chance to know about God go to hell? If yes then why would God create this man knowing full and well no matter how much freewill the man had he would go to hell and receive eternal damnation? If no then why write the bible at all?

(Delete if this sounds to debate like i am not writing this to start a debate just to give my inital opinon on my question.)

He could have left us to our own devices leaving us with true freewill and if we got too evil he could have blantantly revialed himself to us and say what he needed to say to change our way of life.(if you say that some would still be evil that is also wrong considering a All powerful God would know exactly what would be needed to make a person be a good person). This is doing less then what he did befor in the bible (the flood the burning down of S and G and dystroying the Tower fo Bable mauling 42 children with 2 bears) and much more effecant.

Does it say in the Bible he will go to hell? Do you think God unaware of His own creation and unable to communicate by conscience? Sounds like you have played the part of God and are falsely accusing the creator of evil generated from your own imagination.

Everything He creates and gives life, He is able to judge according to His own pleasure and character of perfect love. If it dies as a vessel used as example or instruction, cannot He raise it from the dead and give it life, choices, whatever He wants? You do not know the mind of God, but have listened to the voice of hatred and deception that is God's enemy - satan. Your indictments are based on ignorance, and instead of seeking the truth through diligence and labor of study, have taken the easy path of hear-say and lies. Your choice is to go on hear-say or to seek the truth with an open heart to the truth.

Hebrews 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Those persons who have never heard of Jesus Christ [like those island folks you ask about] are in the lving mercy of the Lord God. In your scenario, the really good guy who did good for his people and saving lives etc, would very likely not be ****** to hell. God is the Judge. And He is a fair one. He will weigh the evidence.

As for the Bible, that is written for Christians to have the very words of the Lord God.
Back in the Apostles' days, as they went around preaching, OTHER PEOPLE were claiming that they knew what Jesus *really* taught. These "other people" were preaching falsely.
The Apostles and other early Christians who were WITH the Apostles wrote the real story, so that Christians would know "THIS was written by the Apostle Matthew, HE was WITH Jesus. THIS is the true story."

As writings continued, by true Christians and by false, there was confusion as to which books are inspired by God for True Christians, and which are false books.
The True Christian Bishops of True Christianity would write to each other and gather together to discuss these matters. The Church determined, through prayer, and under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, which books are truly inspired and which are false. And we have the Bible.

Sadly, many of those false books reamin today and are touted as "lost books of the Bible" These books were not lost; they were discounted by true Christians.
The Gospel of Thomas <-- False
The Gospel of Mary [Magdalene] <-- False
These false books are more than fiction; they are to deceive people into believing such falsehoods as true: That Mary Magdalene was one of the 12 Apostles, for example. And that she founded a Gnostic Christian Church. <-- FALSE.

The Holy Spirit, Who is God, who dwells within His People, guides and protects His CHurch, and Sacred Scriptures, The Bible.

And so, for part of the answer to 'Why write the Bible?". The Bible is to be a safeguard in knowing what is true Christianity and what is not.

And the Bible is for Christian instruction, to encourage us and to guide us in following The Lord God.

Jesus says "I am the way, the truth and the life. noone comes to the father except through me." If someone does not know the Lord Jesus, they will not be saved. However, you cannot then call God an unfair God. The truth is that "There is noone righteous, not even one, noone who seeks God, noone who understands, all have turned away" Romans 3. This means that everyone deserves to go to hell as soon as they are born into this world.
How you relate this to free will i do not quite understand, but i will give ou my opinion on the subject anyways. We do not have free will. God is completely sovereign. yet while God is sovereign, we are still completely responsible for our actions. This is seen in many places in the bible - Exodus with Pharoah(God hardened Pharoah's heart yet Pharoah was responsible), the Babylonians(GOd raised them up to strike down Israel yet then punished them), Christ's death(God controlled the people who put Christ to death yet then punished them), and finally in Romans 9 we have Paul say "Why should we be punished, for who can resist his will?" It is clear to see that God's sovereignty is intertwined with our responsibility. A hard concept but one we must accept.

Hi there!

Romans speaks of the invisible qualities of God whereas there is a time when all people come to recognize the higher power of God. While your person is identified as living a good life and helping people, there would still be a time in his life when recognizing the invisibile qualities of God would determine his eternal fate. The answer though, would still lie with the moral attributes of God.

The great part is that through it all, God still loves each of His creations and it is great that you recognize that God IS a personal God and that he is interested in all areas of our lives.

You're starting with a false assumption. Everyone has sinned and rejected God. (Romans 3:23, Matthew 19:17). Those who lived without hearing the gospel will stand before God and be judged on what they did hear and see, and they will fail. We earn hell by sinning. We are graciously given heaven by God's grace through Jesus. No one earned heaven by being good, we haven't the capacity to be THAT good.

Is it wrong to offer mercy to one condemned man and not all? If so, mercy would be held hostage and be of no effect.

Those without the law are judged as not having the law. There are different levels of hell and heaven. No one can deny their conscience (con-with) (science-knowledge), so they know they sinned, as God wrote His law on our hearts. Not only that, but but the heavens declair God's glory, so none are without excuse.

Rom 2:12 For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;
Rom 2:13 (For not the hearers of the law [are] just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
Rom 2:14 For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves:
Rom 2:15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and [their] thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another;)
Rom 2:16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

You seem to be confusing several things.
ok, free will. you can choose which path to take and our choices dictate what the consequences will be.
Free will also concerns love.
If I made something to love me that had to free choice it wouldn't really love me.
would I want to force someone to be with me, or would I want someone to want/ choose to be with me. Love is a choice.
Now the flood....If you've read that book you'd see that the fallen angels came down and took human women and produced an mixed race of human and angelic beings...note that they were giants, held high possitions of power over man and sin was rampant. This defiled race was mostly wiped out in the flood but not completely...I think there was still some fooling about as the bible says they were also after that....note Goliath.
Your going to have to do some study to understand many things in the bible.

Well, it would quickly become apparent that God's desire wasn't for that person to be saved. That person didn't end up where he was at by accident. Where we are born and the circumstances to which we are born are ordained by God.

If no then why write the bible at all?

The Bible isn't written to tell us how to get saved. It's written to tell us why we're saved. The Bible isn't about man. It's about God.

He could have left us to our own devices leaving us with true freewill and if we got too evil he could have blantantly revialed himself to us and say what he needed to say to change our way of life.(if you say that some would still be evil that is also wrong considering a All powerful God would know exactly what would be needed to make a person be a good person).

Left to our own devices would not cause "some to still be evil." It would cause ALL to still be evil. The will of fallen man, though not free, is naturally inclined to rebell against God. If God does not intervene that is exactly what we do.

God bless

Ecclesiastes|12:7 Then shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and
the spirit shall return unto God who gave it.

All living things eventually return to God when they die. God inspired the Bible for the same reason he inspired everything else to exist; it's a drama. When you write a play, you'd like to have a booklet to let the audience know whats coming up in the next scene, so that they can follow the plot.

A cut and paste from the Catholic Answers website (www.catholic.com):

"Quotations from the Church Fathers give the straight story. They show that the early Church held the same position on this as the contemporary Church does—that is, while it is normatively necessary to be a Catholic to be saved (see CCC846; Vatican II, Lumen Gentium 14), there are exceptions, and it is possible in some circumstances for people to be saved who have not been fully initiated into the Catholic Church (CCC847).

Notice that the same Fathers who declare the normative necessity of being Catholic also declare the possibility of salvation for some who are not Catholics.

These can be saved by what later came to be known as "baptism of blood" or " baptism of desire" (for more on this subject, see the Fathers Know Best tract, The Necessity of Baptism).

The Fathers likewise affirm the possibility of salvation for those who lived before Christ and who were not part of Israel, the Old Testament Church.

However, for those who knowingly and deliberately (that is, not out of innocent ignorance) commit the sins of heresy (rejecting divinely revealed doctrine) or schism (separating from the Catholic Church and/or joining a schismatic church), no salvation would be possible until they repented and returned to live in Catholic unity."

Hey what's up.

Natro said:

Why did he do good things? who taught him? why did they teach him? If no one taught him, then how did he know that saving is right and helping others is right? Did he listen to his gut feeling? how does he know that his gut feeling is true? Is there something inside him that comes with this knowledge?

this is where philosophers like Plato and Socrates got stuck.

If yes then why would God create this man knowing full and well no matter how much freewill the man had he would go to hell and receive eternal damnation?
We are not in the position to know who goes to hell or not. The outside surface of the person does not express clearly what is going inside, we can guess but only God knows for certain.

Therefore yes can not be the answer because we are not God to know how to judge this person. If you think it would be wrong to send this person to hell, for what? for not reading the bible? for not knowing God like I know Him? What makes you think that God would not think it is wrong to send someone to hell for something so insignificant, in this case? Just by serving others, we are worshipping God. Thats how simple it is, and always has been.

In my opinion Hell is like seperation from God. And for those who hear the law and know there is a God, but reject Him anyway, they will be judged.

If someone does not here the law but know right from wrong, but they choose to be greedy and rule over people, and reject the painful cries of others, this too will receive judgement.

The thing is, God is Spirit, not just "Written" words. For example, i can write something but its not the same as me speaking to you in person, where my words can be felt and clearly understood than this letter.

This is why ancient philosophers never liked the idea of writing things down.

But His words were Spoken, His words were Written, so there is no excuse.

I also believe that we are all going to be Judged at the same time.

If no then why write the bible at all?
The Bible was written because people felt it needed to be written. On the outside this is how it seems. But how do you know that it was not their "gut feeling" (or the Holy Spirit) that made them get together and put together a bible all about the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit?

why do we need a bible if we have free will?
Why do we need cars that honk if we know how to look both ways?

Some of us don't follow directions, some of us are deaf.

Once again, because of the compressing effect written words have, the Bible is the basis but there is still something missing. Without that, the Bible is meaningless. In other words, i see the bible as the basis to distinguishing the voice of God, so i move from the Written word, to the Spoken word. From Judaism to Christianity, from Moses to Jesus.

He could have left us to our own devices leaving us with true freewill and if we got too evil he could have blantantly revialed himself to us and say what he needed to say to change our way of life.
See that word "too evil", what is too evil? can something actually be too evil? who accepts a little bit of evil? how accepts some evil? who likes evil! (Think, what i may think is evil, might be pleasure to you. This is not what i am speaking about. but simply think of what You think is evil and tell me if You would accept it, or some of it. in other words, evil is evil.)

As for God revealing himself. You are aware that the God i believe in is all powerful. Now, at this point i would have to wonder off in Christianity. But i am learning to stay focused.

God has spoken, even written what we need to do to change our lives. apparently it didn't work the way you expected it to work, or else you wouldn't be asking this quesion. It's not just hearing or reading that makes us christians, there are plenty of things that happen spiritually, but once again, i don't want to wonder off.

(if you say that some would still be evil that is also wrong considering a All powerful God would know exactly what would be needed to make a person be a good person).
Good observation. since i said that God did reveal Himself, does this make God semi-powerful?

Ok heres something. I AM a farmer, (yes the most used and common analogy, what more can i say) Anyway, i plant a seed. It grows but it grows with some weeds. Am i going to be foolish enough to rip those weeds right out of the ground next to my underdeveloped flowers? God is able to rip evil right out of its roots, But remember this, God didn't give us "salvation" so He can destroy us.

We are those plants entangled with those weeds. If God were to rip those weeds, or Evil, guess what, it would destroy us also. So what does the farmer do? He cuts down the weeds a bit, and maintains them low, He looks for which plants are growing and which plants are dying. some plants will be so involved with the weeds, that they will be one with the weeds. But when harvest arrives, well, God wouldn't have to whisper anymore.

God whispers (trims the weeds down), because its the best way to help that plant grow. If God were to shout like a trumpet, (rip the weeds out), before our time, it would utterly destroy us and He would ruin all his hard work. First God will lift up the harvest, and then He will cast the weeds into the fire.

Well i strayed off to christian concepts. I can't help it.

This is doing less then what he did befor in the bible (the flood the burning down of S and G and dystroying the Tower fo Bable mauling 42 children with 2 bears) and much more effecant.
This is jewish history, and being that i am a christian i wouldn't do it justice trying to explain it my way.

This is deeper than what you think it is. Or why is the bible so difficult to read? I can't even explain tiny peices of it in a few paragraphs, or a few pages (for those who know how much i write), what makes me think that the Bible will answer everything in one shot? What makes me think i can learn it all in one day?
We live life to learn lessons, Until graduation which is after death.
Does this mean that Scripture is worthless? Ofcourse Not! We need the Bible as much as a student needs a text book for Math class.

I see the Bible in deep deep layers.

Take a small peice of paper that has the words

"you found trouble"

on the top. This would be meaningless to me. Then i open the peice of paper and it says

"Misery and dispair",

even more pointless stuff. At this point you can through the piece of paper away. But then since you weren't able to go deeper, you wouldn't be able to read the rest.

"drowning in the storm"

"But at the eye of the storm there was peace."

"a narrow place that a child can find."

"follow for a while until the winds unwind,"

"The dark clouds leave and the bright sun shines"

I can not say that by reading the bible day and night everything will click, but with enough faith, and dedication, God will find it in His will to reveal what He feels.

That is, because of His grace.

I don't work to find God's favor, but I already found God's favor, because of He who died on the cross for me and for you! revealed His plan of Salvation, in my imperfect condition, not because i was qualified already but because He made me qualified through His blood. and this is why i work and serve Him.

In conclusion. I don't know much about other religions but i know that for christianity, the search starts in the heart, then it leads to the bible, then to someone, then life, then the cycle repeats not exactly in that order, but each time, you to grow and gain wisdom and knowledge and get closer and personal connection with God.

In other words, if someone wrote a manual on how to install a car, i am going to read it, i am not going to throw away the book. Because the book may have something that i couldn't see from where i was looking.

there are exceptions, and it is possible in some circumstances for people to be saved who have not been fully initiated into the Catholic Church (CCC847).
What's this mess about being saved by initation into a church? If you believe in Jesus and ask him into your heart then that is enough to be saved.

Lots of good answers already so I won't go into scripture.
Did you know that some American Indian tribes and some tribes elsewhere around the world already had a personal faith in God before the bible reached them. Some American Indians called him the great spirit and when the missionarys reached them with the bible they readily accepted Christ, as they already knew Him. I read of a missionary to a tribe in India who showed up and when he explained Jesus to them they said " so that is His name" we have been worshiping Him and didn't know His name.
You will be judged by what you know. You don't have to have the bible or a missionary. So the question is " what are you doing with your knowledge of Christ"?

good post marc! there's a good book written by a Christian missionary called 'eternity in their hearts' by Don Richardson It explains many tribes that have been visited by a missionary, and as they arrived, the tribe had already had God revealed to them. With God all things are possible
