  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why ten commandements?

When God talked to Moises in the mount of Sinai close to the people He give him the ten commandements at first, then people got scared and went away, and then there were more commandements, by example reject false rumor.

Planks written by the finger of God is a later fact, and Bible doesn´t relate what laws were written.

Therefore why there are ten commandements according to christian tradition, and not more?

Here are the Ten Commandments from Exodus 20 (and Deuteronomy 5). These are the Laws that were both spoken by God and then written by God on the two tablets while on Mt. Sinai.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
5 “You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me,
6 but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
7 “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain.
8 “Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
9 “Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
10 but the seventh day is a sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
11 “For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day and made it holy.
12 “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
13 “You shall not murder.
14 “You shall not commit adultery.
15 “You shall not steal.
16 “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.”

And I believe Moses answers at least two of your questions in Deuteronomy 5 immediately following his restating of the Decalogue to the people of Israel.
“These words the Lord spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud and of the thick gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more.
He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me"
Deuteronomy 5:22

Scripture does isolate the 10 commandments in Exodus and Deuteronomy.
But it's important to note that the Old and New Testaments speaks of the "law of Moses" including all the commandments, so I am not sure why Christians only think that there are only 10 commandments.

Hi DDG, I've known a LOT of Christians from many different churches/denominations over my 54 years, but I've never met one that believes the 10 Commandments are the only commandments ever given to us by God. Is there some special group in Christendom that actually believes this for some reason or another?

I just mean the ones who still claim that we should follow the 10 commandments, even though we are under the law of Christ, but yet they never mention all the other commandments that we should be following, because if they still believe that we are under the old law then every old law need to be followed.

The distinction is that the big 10 were written by the finger of G-d.

Now if you want to really blow your mind, how many dimensions are there in string theory? And if you can do the intellectual exercise of understanding all of those 10 dimensions which truly do cover every possible aspect of our Universe w/ no way to go beyond that, you will see that it beautifully explains the seemingly impossible attributes of G-d. So yes, I am saying that He revealed (at least some aspects, or foretold of them) our most modern accomplishments in math and science from the beginning

The question has substance for spiritual life: the third commandement of the planks, the observance of saturday, is abolished due to be ceremonial.

In the law there were three kinds of rules: moral, ceremonial and judicial: ceremonial, as Passover or saturday, were symbols of future sacrifice of the Lamb: the judicial precepts were payment for sin, but Christ payed all sins in Calvary; on the other hand, moral precepts are current forever.

In the ten commandments there´s one precept abolished, but out of planks there are moral precepts as reject false rumor that are current. So the question is still there.

On the other hand we find in Exodus 34:

The Lord said to Moses, “Cut two stone tablets like the former, that I may write on them the commandments which were on the former tablets that you broke...... Moses then cut two stone tablets like the former, and early the next morning he went up Mount Sinai as the Lord had commanded him, taking along the two stone tablets....
“Here, then,” said the Lord, “is the covenant I will make. Before the eyes of all your people I will work such marvels as have never been wrought in any nation anywhere on earth, so that this people among whom you live may see how awe-inspiring are the deeds which I, the Lord, will do at your side. But you, on your part, must keep the commandments I am giving you today.....
You shall not worship any other god, for the Lord is ‘the Jealous One’; a jealous God is he.....
“You shall not make for yourselves molten gods.
“You shall keep the feast of Unleavened Bread. .....

“You shall not boil a kid in its mother’s milk.”
Then the Lord said to Moses, “Write down these words, for in accordance with them I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” So Moses stayed there with the Lord for forty days and forty nights, without eating any food or drinking any water, and he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten commandments.
