Perhaps the Calvinists have it right. God has already chosen his "chosen few". So those who can't believe, can't believe because they are not his chosen. It's not fair, I agree. But life isn't fair, its very very unfair actually. We have to assume God knows what he's doing. We're probably not getting the whole story. I mean, would the ultimate creator even trust us with the whole story? We are some messed up creatures to be sure, and who knows what kind of chaos we would create for ourselves if we knew everything!People do not willfully choose what they find credible or incredible. Just as we don't choose who we love, we don't choose what we find credible or incredible. You ask questions and gather evidence, but at the end, whether you find a claim to be credible or incredible is not a choice. For example, I honestly can not choose to believe that U.S. Government was behind 9/11 attacks; I just find that too incredible. If this belief was required for salvation, I would be doomed.
Similarly, I honestly can not choose to believe that Jesus was a man-god who sacrificed himself to himself to appease himself to save humanity; I just find that too incredible. If this belief was required for salvation, I would be doomed.
My point is that there are countless people who honestly find the Christian message too incredible and therefore simply can not bring themselves to accept it as true. These people, to no fault of their own, have no way to [Christian] salvation.
Logically speaking, I don't believe these people deserve to be punished because they really do not have a choice.
