  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why are there so many different types of Baptist?

What are the differences between all the different types of Baptist Churches?

Such as Missionary Baptist, Freewill Baptist, Independent Baptist, Southern Baptist, Reformed Baptist and so on.

There are differences in doctrine. So you have Reformed Theology. You have Independent Baptists that don't want to be tied to a conference of Baptist churches. Of course no church will get it 100% correct but that doesn't mean we are not to strive for sound doctrine.

That is it in a nut shell.

What it boils down to is theological differences. Baptist doctrines as I know it, is pretty standard. (Baptism, the Lord's Supper, etc)

But theological differences stand to separate churches.

God Bless

Till all are one.

Sometimes it is an issue as to how to go about missions. As I understand it, the American Baptists favor home missions over foreign missions. Southern Baptists do both.

I attended a Missionary Baptist church for quite awhile and they were very legalistic. At the time I had no idea what legalistic was really. Then I moved onto a Southern Baptist church and really enjoy it.

I would like to know a little about FreeWill Baptist mainly because I only remember being told how unscriptual they were for so long. I know nothing about them.
So, can anybody tell me anything about FreeWill Baptist?

God made everyone different and made us all think and understand things differently. Everyone has a different opinion on what the bible says about certain issues and about how church business and finances should be handled. Most of the time two Southern Baptists can read a passage in the bible and understand it differently. Due to this, groups have branched off from the original Baptist, Catholic, Methodist,....etc. and formed what they thought was a better system. Personally I think God inspires each person to worship Him in his or her own personal way, and I think what ever denomination that takes you too, you should follow where God has led you. As long as the church is Bible taught and Christ is in charge.

A lot of the differences are political and/or ecuminical. Many people left my previous church because the role of the minister was becoming more authoritarian, the power of many committees was removed and given to the minister and deacons (as soon as deacons were elected that would agree to this coup-de-tat), and some new committees were created (with most of the deacons as members) to pull power away from the individual congregation member. My church used to have an on-line prayer group, but that was taken away (because all prayers have to be approved by the previously non-existent prayer committee), because it could be used to voice dissent.

What really made some people leave was the fact that the only part of that that was voted in were the minister and the deacons.

But some Baptist churches really like that sort of thing. I, and many others, do not.

Why so many catholic churches?

Not quite comparable.

Monastic orders in the middle ages would possibly be a better comparison.

Most of the churches I have attended only voted on ministers, church board members and building projects. No other type of church business.
I think I would like to know more on overall financial issues, but I can't say I have any complaints.

At my church, we have a business meeting on 1 Wednesday a month, everything that occurs, Financial, outreach, events, church materials, are all discussed for the entire congregation. Every member gets a vote. I think it is pretty cool. It can be pretty boring and alot of people don't come on that day, but I think it is worthwhile.
