  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why should we read the lives of the saints?

Do you have any stories on how this has been beneficial for you, or related quotes you'd like to share? Here are a couple I've collected while reading the lives of some contemporary saints:

"He also liked reading the lives of the saints, which relax the mind, sweeten the heart, enrich ones discernment, and increase one's zeal for greater ascetical feats. He said that the lives of the saints are like a mirror in which one can see ones faults." - Elder Ephraim, 'My Elder Joseph the Hesychast'

"The saints are friends of God. All day long one can meditate on and take delight in their achievements and imitate their way of life. The saints gave themselves entirely to Christ. By reading these books, you will gradually acquire meekness, humility and love, and your soul will be made good." - Saint Porphyrios, 'Wounded by Love'

"When we read the lives of the saints, we gain two things. Firstly, the example of their struggles wakes us from the numbness of negligence, and secondly when we read the lives of the saints with reverence, the saints intercede to Christ for us." -Elder Arsenios the cave-dweller

Reading about the life of Saint Maximilian Maria Kolbe has been of great help to me. He wrote, but was never able to collect all of his thoughts and theology into a single book.

He has helped me, though, to stay on board at a difficult job, hang in there, and keep going. There is a theology of thought, then there is a theology of love and difficulty. I think Saint Maximilian Kolbe has helped me live out that second one.

Any specific books of his you’d recommend?
