Luke 24:37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. 38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?
39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

In my experience people are afraid of things they cannot understand. It has everything to do with our biological survival instincts. Every single one of those men had known at the very least that Jesus was dead.

And then suddenly he wasn't. I can understand their innate biological response to be more than a little creeped out.

I hate the whole "afraid of things they cannot understand" line. A person can understand Spirits quite well and still get freaked out. I have studied the paranormal a whole lot, and I would still get freaked out if I suddenly saw a spirit. It has nothing to do with how much (or little) you know.

For example, many people are afraid of Spiders. We understand them right? Of course, but it doesn't take away the creepiness factor, does it? A lot of people dont like Bees, Dogs, Fire, Worms, Heights, Airplanes etc.

My younger sister is scared of MOTHS and BUTTERFLIES! Talk about stupid. But you know what? We understand everything I just mentioned. Yet, it doesn't remove the potential danger from these things, nor does it remove any fear or feelings of dread. And in some cases, there is no potential danger. Such as with Moths or Butterflies. Still, some people are scared of things that cannot hurt them. That's not to say that Spirits cannot, they can, and they've proven to be dangerous more often than not.

So, as I said, knowing a lot about Spirits WILL NOT make you fearless.

Elder, you asked, speaking of Luke 24:37, Why were the apostiles and disciples afraid?

Lets say you and I were followers (disciples of Christ.) Were standing outside of Jeruslem, at a place where three men have just been crucified. Now speaking of Christ, we see a bloody torn man. Three inch spikes, meaning thorns have been pushed down into his skull, his beard has been torn from his face, he suffered lashing on both his back and front, and then has nails punched through each hand, and both feet.

Now we see a Roman soldier put a spear in his side, showing that He was dead.

We observe him being taken from the cross, and buried in a tomb, with a very large rock sealing him in. And last of all, we see a Roman guard protecting the tomb.

Three days later, rumors begin to come to us that one woman, and two men having seen Christ alive. Now think about it, would you have believed a rumor that he was seen alive?

Now the two men who had been on the road to Emmaus, and spoke to the Lord, report seeing him also. They did not realizing who He was until He vanished from their site. Now they go to Jerusalem, meet with the 11 apostiles, and other disciples.

There is a closed room, the door is shut tight, suddenly, out of thin air, we see this figure that looks like, speaks like, and acts like the bloodied, torn, figure we last saw hanging dead from a cross. Now, out of the blue, he is standing before us, and except for the puncture wounds from the nails, the guy looks as if He had a normal day.

What do you think your reaction would have been? Amazement? unbelief? anxiety? fear? or all of the above.

I rest my case.

Why should the disciples be afraid of a spirit?

What about the event :)

Matt 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went away to them, walking upon the sea,
26 and the disciples having seen him walking upon the sea, were troubled saying--`It is an apparition/ghost/fantasma <5326>,'

and from the fear they cried out;
[Mark 14:23]

5326. phantasma fan'-tas-mah from 5324; (properly concrete) a (mere) show ("phantasm"), i.e. spectre:--spirit.

People have always been afraid of ghosts and things related to the afterlife - this is simply a fact...
...It's no different than the following.

Acts 12,12
And considering, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, who was surnamed Mark, where many were gathered together and praying. And when he knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, whose name was Rhode. And as soon as she knew Peter's voice, she opened not the gate for joy, but running in she told that Peter stood before the gate. But they said to her: Thou art mad. But she affirmed that it was so. Then said they: It is his angel. But Peter continued knocking. And when ey had opened, they saw him, and were astonished.

They thought Peter was dead and what was at the door was his 'ghost' AKA angel.

Acts 23,8
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, NOR spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

The Sadducees believed in angels as described in the Jewish Scriptures....
...What they rejected was the belief that at death man continued to exist as an angel OR a spirit.
...Paul used this "foolish understanding" of the Sadducees to get himself out of hot water.

Their power to cast out spirits was given to them by Jesus when he was on earth . now that he was gone, they would have reasonably lost all such confidence .
Jesus was still with them ans even so they were still afraid when he very much with them.
Matthew 14:26
And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.

At what? Now think, if it was as many of us believe the spirit of Jesus that did could not die then they had nothing to fear. If would have been Jesus.

There is more to it than that. If it was that the disciples believed that a spirit could exist without the body then they had nothing to fear for then it would only be Jesus. But if as only some believe that when a man is dead that is the end until Jesus come again, then they would had had reason to fear. As you have said, they knew he was complete dead and now there is something looking like Him. What we have failed to accept is that if they believe that the dead were just that dead. Then if would only be satan who was impersonating them and therefore reason to fear. What would be there would certainly not be holy.

In Scripture the existence of the spirit minus the body = BAD, it was not how God created us to exist.
...It is therefore an "un-natural existence" and naturally shunned by all cultures.

The spirits of the just "cry out" until they receive their resurrected bodies back.....

Indeed there is such a thing as unholy angels.

The point of my mentioning Acts 12 is that it explicitly says that Peter fled to a house of "belivers"...
...And they ( in keeping with basic Christian belief ) believed Peter had been killed by the sword.
...And what was standing at the door was Peter's ghost or angel.

The only segment of Judaism who didn't believe in a spiritual afterlife OR the Resurrection of the body....
...Was the Sadducees - and Jesus rebuked them for their foolish notions.

It is not stated nor implied that they believed in ghost as you put it. If the same was thought of Jesus there would have been no reason to fear. Now if this was believed by the disciples, explain the fear towards the ghost of the God and savour.

Elder, Elder, come on. A lot of people say there not afraid of the dark, until they have to walk down a loney empty street at night.

And if something or someone jumped out at them, they can usually break the world record for the 100 yard dash, even the strongest of men will have some fear.

Talking about believing in spirit creatures, is one thing, seeing one is quite another. Even the bravest will react in fear. To deny this is to deny human nature.

Eliphaz got spooked (job4)

12 Now a thing was secretly brought to me, and mine ear received a little thereof.
13 In thoughts from the visions of the night, when deep sleep falleth on men,
14 Fear came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones to shake.
15 Then a spirit passed before my face; the hair of my flesh stood up:
16 It stood still, but I could not discern the form thereof: an image was before mine eyes, there was silence, and I heard a voice, saying...

The text explicitly states THEY thought "IT" was his ( Peter's ) angel ( aka ghost )...
...That's boldly stated, right there.

That is simply human nature as I've ( and other's ) have already told you...
