  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Romans 3:2 First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God (NIV)

In the advantages of being a Jew, Paul lists just one. But that is a very big one. They were entrusted with the very words of God. No one else had what they had. There were no other inspired writings of God. That same advantage can be said about you and I today. We have the only writing where God has given His words to man. We have the Bible. It is the only place where the words of God can be found. Not only that, but we have been given the responsibility of telling others what we have learned from scripture. To the lost we have the responsibility to share the good news of the gospel. To the believer, we have the responsibility to teach what God has taught us from the Word. So the challenge for you and I today is this, will we choose to dive into the Word and learn God’s message and ways, and will we take on the responsibility we have been given to share God’s Word with others around us?

Let’s take this one a little deeper.

Romans 3:1 - 2: 1 What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? 2 Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God (NIV)

Meaning – In the early days of Christianity, there was a thought that being a Christian meant following Jewish traditions and adding some Jesus into the mix. In the book of Romans, Paul goes through every aspect of Judaism and tears down the practice of religious acts, shows how making a right relationship with God comes only by personal and individual faith in Jesus Christ. So, he asks the question, “What advantage is there to being a Jew?” The list has only one element in today’s passage – they were given the words of God. God chose to communicate His Word with one nation. That nation was Israel. So the Jews were given a great treasure. This was not the words of a man or a philosopher. These were the very words and commands of God. The Jews were given the history of the world. This came to no one else. The Jews were given the boundaries and instructions for living their lives. No one else had this. So the Jews had a great treasure. But with this treasure, there was a responsibility. The Jews could not say, “I didn’t know.” The Word of God had been delivered to them. They had no excuse.

Application – Most of you who read this are not Jews. I am not a Jew, so how does this passage apply to you and I? We can see a parallel to believers today and the Jews. We too have been given the Word of God. It has been entrusted to us. Two thoughts come from that simple phrase “entrusted with the words of God.” First, these are the words of God. We should hold them in higher regard. We should be dying to see what message God has for us in His Word every day. Instead we spend our time playing games on our phone, watching TV, reading Facebook, and finding ten thousand things to do besides spending time in the Word of God. One day, God is going to ask, “What were you doing and what were you thinking?” We will be without excuse. We have the Word of God and it is so readily available to us. Yet we ignore it as though it were worthless. Second, we have been “entrusted.” That means we have been given a treasure and we have a responsibility to be good managers of the treasure we have been given. We have a responsibility to share the Word of God with others. We have a responsibility to reach the lost with the good news in the Bible. And we have the responsibility to teach fellow believers what the Bible says and how it works in our lives. So, we too have an advantage. We have been entrusted with a treasure. What will you choose to do with the treasure God has entrusted you with?
