  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

Why no new Ecumenical Councils?

I think we should do another. We could do another, couldn't we?

we could.

There are rules in place, aren't they?

yes.

Would they invite Pope Francis?

we could, but we don't need him. he is not a bishop in the Church so he would not have a vote. his opinion would be irrelevant.

Or has the term "ecumenical" become too tarnished due to the so-called "ecumenical movement (if this is what it is called)"?

no, ecumenical is fine. ecumenism can be bad, and that is the ugliness of the ecumenical movement. but there is a good ecumenism as well, so ecumenical is not bad.

actually, thems not the rules. prior to the Schism, no Pope called a council, Ephesus was called and the canons enacted before the Roman delegation got there, and the only one (I think) where a Pope actually attended, he was excommunicated until he repented.

this is not the Roman forum, so we don't recognize those as being anything.
Sorry, I didn't realize where I was.

no, you are good. it is important to highlight the differences between us, because there are a lot of wrong assumptions out there

I remember two things:

The Council of Trullo was after the 6th, 7th, or 8th "Ecumenical" Council.
Pope Francis is to be invited.

those were prior to Rome leaving the Church. Trullo was not after the 7th. Pope Francis would only be invited, if invited, to observe.

No absolute need, obviously, but isn't it a tradition to invite the Pope to an Ecumenical Council?

yeah, back when he was in the Church, since Rome is anathema, it would not make sense to invite them unless they were willing to repent and return home.

He could participate as a witness, though.

sure, but that wouldn't do anything. and since they would get no vote in anything we do, Rome coming would be a waste of time and money.
