  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Do you mean that is the impression you get, that Mt Athos is considered more important? I always got the impression that this was true of St Catherine's on Mt Sinai.

In any case, I think it is true that Mt Athos is unique in that there exist monastic communities from all over Europe in that little area. You have Greeks, Bulgarians, Serbs, Romanians and Russians all rubbing shoulders there. I look forward to there once more being Georgians represented as they once were at Iveron. There are also individual monks living in the sketes and monasteries representing many other nations including America, Australia and Japan.

Mt Athos is also unique in that the entire peninsular is dedicated to Panagia. It is known as Panagia's garden and she has appeared frequently throughout its long history. Mt Athos has also produced many of the Patriarchs of our church as well as innumerable saints.

Are you an Orthodox Christian? If not you will have to plan earlier than most. They only let 10 non-Orthodox on to the Holy Mountain a day.

Additionally, you must stay in the Narthex during services. If you knew the experience that awaited you in the Nave, you would convert before you went :)

I am a Christian and am hoping to perform pilgrimage to mount Athos in the near future, can anyone give me tips about travelling there and any other tips that you think you should give!

Peace,
Kas.

so I think I'll still be on topic if I give the following - not directly related - tip :D . Go take a look there :
http://www.antiochian-orthodox.co.uk/lancaster.htm
or there
http://www.antiochian-orthodox.co.uk/heywood.htm
and see what it is about before visiting Athos. They are both in your county!

Or if you can go a bit further away to Manchester, the following monastery
http://www.anastasis.org.uk/
has been founded by the athonite father Ephraim, so it can be a taste of the Mountain much closer to your place! Although I have never visited myself, as I live down south and been always busy! But I have briefly met father Ephraim who's the abbot and I can recommend it.

Hope that helps  .

I Am Orthodox, But Not Eastern Orthodox ;-)

Please undertand that I do not wish to insult, but convention is to call those that adhere to generally accepted right practice and doctrine as orthodox, while the term Orthodox is reserved for those members of the canonical Orthodox Churches (e.g. Greek, Russian, Serbian, OCA et. al.). IOW, you are orthodox but not Eastern Orthodox :)

Pack very light. You will only be there 4 days, You might carry one light clean shirt for the bus ride back to Thessaloniki but you will be riding with a load of monks/pilgrims that haven't showered/bathed either so it won't matter much :) Changes of socks, underwear, toothpaste, a washrag/soap to wash your face/hands something to carry water in. You can pick up a adequate map at Ouranopolis while waiting for the ferry to depart. Compass, moleskin, light first aid kit, the usual dayhiking stuff.

Prayerbook, small diptych, chotki

To give a quick comment regarding the OP, I think that outside Orthodoxy, why Mount Athos is particularly brought to mention is the legal barring of women from the entire peninsula. For some reason, this particular bit of lore captivated news writers, and it led to Athos being especially mentioned, even though it's merely an extension of what most monastic communities prescribe for their grounds.

The autocephalic community at St. Catherine's in Sinai gets mentioned solely as the place where manuscripts, including the Sinai Codex, were found.

This is of course in no way to contradict anything that's been said in this thread -- it's to comment on what the secular media have done in reaction to the two monastic sites, from a non-Orthodox perspective.
