Chuck Smith from Deut 18 http://www.blueletterbible.org/Comm/chuck_smith_sn/Deu/Deu17.html
II. WHY THE SUDDEN REVIVAL IN OCCULTIC POWER?
A. Some blame the TV programs.
B. One prominent psychiatrist blames the church.
1. He claims that man basically wants to believe in the supernatural.
2. When the theologians began proclaiming that God was dead.
3. And sought to rationalize the miracles of Christ and the Bible.
a. Jesus had excellent vision, saw fish jumping.
>b. 5,OOO fed by common practice of carrying lunch up their sleeves.
4. This theology created spiritual void and people began turning to the occult to fulfill the need of believing in the supernatural.
C. It seems to me it is related to the massive drug abuse.
1. Drugs have always been related to witchcraft
a. In Galatians word witchcraft is Greek word "pharmakeia".
2. Many young people through drugs were introduced to the reality of the spirit world.
a. They became ripe candidates for either Christianity or occultism.
b. Those churches proclaiming the possibility of a dynamic relationship with a living God reaped a harvest of souls, and on the other side the occultic revival was on.

IV. WHAT IS YOUR PROPER ATTITUDE TOWARD IT?
A. Shun it, don't dabble, don't even study it.
1. Many are first drawn by curiosity.
2. Romans 16:19 "Simple concerning evil."
3. God commanded "don't learn to do..."
B. Don't even read your horoscope.
C. Don't visit a fortune teller.
D. If you have a ouija board, destroy it.
E. If in your past you have delved into any of these areas repent and ask God's forgiveness.
F. If you have friends that are involved pray for them.
1. It is a spiritual battle.
a. The weapons of our warfare...
G. Realize our great advantage and victory through Jesus Christ.
1. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble...
2. Jesus has spoiled these principalities and powers.

This reads very much like "Mother Earth News" ... sorry.
No wiggle room on this. You are faced with direct source references as presented at the site page, some even being archaeological discoveries. It's just simply a matter of historical record.

Wiggle room? Unless I'm completely dense (and I admit I've considered the possibility at times) there is absolutely no biblical reference here. Point them out for me if I'm missing them?

That’s right, so follow the bible and the judgment that comes to you will not bring you to shame as it will to those that refuse to follow God‘s counsel and repentance of sin. This is the measure by which all are judged, by the word of God. So preach to Nineveh against their SIN and hope for their repentance, so that they do not fall like Sodom.

Reference to what? Pharmakeia being drug use? Thought we got past that and are discussing the historical existence of drugs. That was your position, wasn’t it? That it’s not translated drugs because no one used it historically? Yet it was used historically. I’m not sure what you are asking for at this point.

Oh, ok, I think I understand what you were meaning. When you said "biblical" I wasn't sure what you were meaning in regards to the link. I didn't sight a biblical site but simply wikipedia, which I admit I don't always agree with, but this does have enough substance to support the point I made. The references can be found by looking closely at the paragraphs (sighting the "history" portion) where it links to the bottom of the page ("References") where the source reference can be located. Some of these references are sighted from books, but in some cases a copy of them can be found online such as for searching the Google site where they have many publications that can read online.

Generally though, with wikipedia, if the information is not accurate or even questionable, the page receives a "dispute" title up top where it is noted that the source material is either missing or incomplete. In this case there is no dispute over the accuracy of the material, unless you find something and report it to them of course. What gets controversial with the site is when only one view is represented among other disputing views. Personally I primarily use the site for the study of technology and the references it provides, but some other topics are accurate as well. I don't find any fault in this report off-hand...

I posted this somewhere else but I realized I would get alot more responses if it was in here. I posted it in somewhere else I found first.

Hello. I am talking to a guy who smokes weed etc. I told him that it was a sin. He shrugged and said um why. I said that God does not like it when people get high and smoke weed. He said how you know. I said the bible. He said the Bible never actually speaks about Marijuana itself. But I explained there was bible verses that said stuff that made you realize it was indeed a sin. He said he tell me a example then. I thought and thought and searched my mind, then I said, "Though shalt not be drunk with whine." he said he doesnt drink whine and thats not marijuanna.

So why is it a sin? What are the reasons and what are the bible verses. He is still awaiting my awnser and still smoking weed etc. I am having trouble trying to explain to him so I need help, and posts in here i can read and then repeat them to him.

1. It destroys the lungs (damaging the temple)
2. It is addictive and we are told to only have one master
3. It is illegal and we are told to obey the local law
4. We are never encouraged to find enjoyment in mind altering states

Now each of 1-3 can be gotten around

1. Eat it instead
2. Many things are addictive . . . caffine . . . sugar . . . wine. As long as they are done in moderation then they are not our master.
3. Do it in Amsterdam where it is legal and sold as salad and in confections (browines) in corner coffee shops

However, 4 is the killer. As a Christian our joy is to be in God . . . not the consumption of some sort of controlled substance for the sake of a "high."

However, if it were for legitimate medical reasons . . . and the first three were sucessfully negotiated . . . then perhaps. Wouldn't be any worse than percosets or vicodin.

But somehow I don't think your friend qualifies for these!

I havent read the whole thread, so i apologize in advance if im unknowingly copying someone else.
I think that some people are going to make every excuse in the world if they want to 'justify' what they do. They know that God dosent want people to do drugs. Anyone knows that.
I somehow doubt very much that the ones that are doing drugs are worrying what the bible says. If they were they wouldnt be doing them in the first place.

“denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in this present world” (Titus 2:12).

no one can wholeheartedly serve two masters (Matthew 6:24; Luke 16:13).

honor God with your body" (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

Its hard to be a slave to the Spirit because your mind becomes so free and truth flows in torrents.
Its easy to be a slave to an altered mind because the truth does'nt flow at all, at most the only nag of truth on the mind is the distant thought that you are cheating yourselves.
To have the Spirit and obedience in control, that is the most addictive state of mind there is. In this day and age you can look to the world quite weak, to live by the Spirit and obedience, that is until you actually start to do it, then you realise that your mind, body and soul is becoming so much stronger than those around you, the ones who are slaves to the world and human nature. You feel like a different breed of person, like a... well i dont know what, but its good lol..
oh yeah the longer you do it the less chance you have of falling, because you do fall, and feel ashamed, but God is good and always leads you back to safety. I couldnt live without the Lord Jesus now.

"Man made alcohol, God made weed, who do you trust?"

Ever hear that quote before? Sure, its most likely taken out of context, but I always thought it held some truth in it.
The way I see it, they clearly must have had drugs back in the bible, because Drugs has existed as long as man has existed maybe longer. So why didn't God talk about weed in the bible.

Weed is a sin just because it is illegal doesn't make sense to me. Why is it even illegal? Alcohol isn't. Propaganda made it illegal. The whole reefer madness and other nonsense like that. Weed doesn't turn people insane, and it doesn't make Mexican or black men rape white women. That was all propaganda made by the U.S goverment.

That has got to be one of the silliest things ive ever seen in my life - and ive seen alot of silly things.
Ill bet you the person who said that smoked weed, right?
An obvious statement of trying to make it justify their means.

And no...drugs were not something back then. God didnt make people try and smoke the weeds...thats not what they are there for.
Someone just got bored one day and decided to do something worthless.
EVERYTHING that can come out of smoking weed is harmful to the body. And also its supposed to be really addictive. If you think that God would want that then - wow...
