Maybe because God gave us all free choice to do as we wish (rather than be little characters controlled by Him) and that humankind chooses to do wrong? The Earth is a living planet so things do happen. There's a very hard to read book by Melvin Tinker called Why do bad things happen to good people. Try looking it up on eBay or Amazon

There is suffering because people do things which cause one another to suffer. They generally do such things because they refuse to trust in God and abuse power and advantage to do for themselves that which God has always freely offered; yet, they continue to reject what he offers.

Often people talk about freewill within questions like this one. What I find interesting is that the same people who ignorantly cry "Why doesn't God come and stop all suffering!" are the same people who refuse to submit to God and would rather spend eternity with their free will in Hell than eternity in submission to God in Heaven. This is essentially the same answer I gave above.

So why doesn't come and put an end to it? Why, he already has - remember that whole hullabalo on Golgotha and Easter morning? Perhaps its not your time table, and God hasn't come to force the world to submit to himself, as even God Almighty does not abuse his obvious advantage. But the Kingdom is at hand. The Church is the breaking in of the end of suffering. When you see the Church befriending those who are marginalized, those who are rejected you see the image of God in Christ befriend those who have rejected himself. Suffering and evil, we have a guarantee that its days are numbered.
