  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Why is "The Purpose Driven Life" so popular?

"I will protect the unity of my church: by acting in love toward other members, by refusing to gossip, by following the leaders

Although the Behrens who studied themselves to be approved and were praised by Paul not scorned for gossip.

Acts 17: 10: “The brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea, and when they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.”

We are to give an account with gentleness, and the defense of the gospel.

1 Peter 3:15 but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you, yet with gentleness and reverence; Christians are called to be not ashamed of accurately handling the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15 - Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. Finally, Christians are charged to the defense of the gospel.

Philippians 1:16 - the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel;

Jude 1:3 “ Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.

The emphasis has shifted toward the man versus the messages they herald. There appears to be a subtle shift in authority, or a growing trend of which is becoming more and more evident of these type of messages. It is by no great surprise that it these messages will continue as the emphasis of man will reach the height of its pentacle to that of worshipping the Anti-Christ.

In short these messages are not only blurred, but it has become skewed, marred and no longer distinguishable from the truth. Where does apostasy start and where does it stop? The answer, it’s finely interwoven into the very fabric of everyday messages and teachings. The messages are cleverly crafted ornate products that tickle the ear of having experiences,
feelings, sensationalism, hype, or emotional resilience. One has become desensitized like the experiment of the Frog in the beaker, Frog was happy sitting in the water, a slow bunson burner was placed at a very low temperature, the frog allicimated to the temperature of which slowly was adjusted over time and soon the frog died from being boiled to death.

II Timothy 4:“3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and will turn away their ears from the truth and will turn aside to myths. 5 But you, be sober in all things, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry.”

The implication and inferences to what is presently being taught across the pulpit today may have a residual unseen side effect but can bring a degree of separation from a known foundation. The metaphor and picture reflects a type of consequence resulting from a slight deviation from the original plan. The original flight plan from Korean Airline Flight 007 was from Anchorage to Seoul and was shot down over the Soviet Union when it deviated from course. The consensus was that overconfidence and carelessness allowed a simple navigation error to go undetected. http://www.christianforums.com/#_edn1 It only took one degree from the original flight path of the airplane to veer off course which inevitably led to its ruin, as is not adhering to sound doctrine.

I think people are easily led by Warren because they are simply not reading their Bible enough. They like it simply because they do not know any better.

Here is an example of what I mean. This past Sunday, my husband and I tried out a new church. The Pastor had a very light sermon, barely going beyond a few scripture verses, and included a lot of humor within the sermon. That wasn't even the worst part. He then said to the congregation, "It is important to read the word daily, how many read your Bible everyday." Out of about 100+ people, maybe 5 raised there hands! Ouch! If this is the case among Christians, no wonder they are not discerning Warren's book as not being totally biblically based, they are barely in the word themselves!

It's also sad how many churches are falling victim to this type of mentallity. My husband and I thought it was just us who were very picky about not hearing enough of the word of God in churches, and too much of the Rick Warren mentallity within churches today. Glad to see there are other believers out there who still like to hear about all the truths of the Bible, concerning the consequences of our sin, not leaving anything out!

I've never read the book. Have heard things about it.

But I do know that God said without a vision my people perish.

We all need to know God's will for our lives and be obedient to fulfill our call. However, I don't believe we should just stay "busy" doing everything and anything. That leads to dead works.

I believe in purpose, vision, direction and obedience to the Lord. So, for those of us who are ignorant to the ideas of the book, can you share some?

Thanks!

Well, he doesn't formally affiliate himself with the Word of Faith movement; however, he did participate in the 100th anniversary of the so-called "Azusa Street Revival"--an event that was headlined by such prominent Word of Faithers as Benny Hinn, T.D. Jakes, Kenneth Copeland, and Creflo Dollar. Not the sort of company that I'd care to keep, frankly.
Didn't know that, wow, I would not be close to that group if you paid me. Thanks for the info.

I shared this in another thread - the article is rather lengthy (you might want to print it off to read - much easier than reading online), but certainly insightful.

About 15 months ago Saddleback celebrated their 25th anniversary. Leading up to the celebration this could be found on their website (sorry, can't verify it at the site now because, of course, it's been updated).
Dear Saddleback Family,

This Sunday's service at Angel Stadium may be the greatest party any of us
ever attend!

It will certainly make history - not just for our Saddleback Church family,
but for the future of the church around the world.

Only one other time since 1980 has our church been able to gather in a single
service. Imagine what it will be like to see our entire church family in one
place!

10 WAYS TO ENJOY THE 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION

BRING SOMEONE WITH YOU! We have 2,000 tickets left (out of 45,000) so if you
need a few more tickets for friends or family come to the ticket table at the
stadium entrance. We will make room for you!

CARPOOL with your small group!

ARRIVE EARLY! Concessions will be open and thousands of small group tailgate
parties will be fun. We have bands playing at the three entrances from
11:15-12:15, Jana Alayra for our children at the Main Gate, a jazz band is at
Gate 1 and Saddleback Praise at Gate 3. We even have the Riders4Christ doing
freestyle motorcycle jumps in the parking lot!

BRING SUNSREEN, HATS, and BOTTLED WATER (No other drinks) Some 25th
anniversary hats, shirts and sweatshirts will be for sale at the stadium.

GET BAPTIZED AT ANGEL STADIUM!
WHEN? Right after the service.
WHERE? Outside Gates 1 or 4.
WHAT DO I WEAR? Modest clothing, or we will provide you shorts, shirts and
towels.
WHERE WILL I CHANGE CLOTHES? In changing tents right by the baptism pools.
WILL THE WATER BE HEATED? Of course!

PLAN A TAILGATE PARTY WITH YOUR SMALL GROUP! You can keep it simple with fast
food or plan a gourmet spread. (invite me to that one!)

ENJOY THE FUN STUFF. From 11:30 to 12:30 inside the stadium we'll show a best
of Saddleback video 3 times, with Pastor Doug on location around the stadium
in between each showing. From 12:30 to 1:00 we'll be preparing for the worship
service with interviews from the stands (you may see yourself on the stadium
screens!), Saddleback videos and special musical guests. There's even a rumor
there may be a Rick Warren "talking mouth" like on Conan O' Brian!

IF YOU HAVE EXTRA TICKETS - please, please return them to LOST TICKET table at
each entrance so others can have a seat! (If you've lost your ticket, go to
this table also.)

PRAY that this event will begin a movement to change the world!

I CAN'T WAIT TO BE THERE WITH YOU!

Pastor Rick

Another thought or two - I read a Barna survey within the past year or so in which he surveyed pastors and asked what writers most influenced them. More said Warren than anyone else - from the article:
Two books emerged as the most helpful of all: The Purpose Driven Life and The Purpose Driven Church, both written by Rick Warren. Purpose Driven Life topped the list, with one out of every five Senior Pastors (21%) naming it as one of the most helpful books they have read in the last three years. The larger a pastor’s church was, the more likely the pastor was to include this book among their top three. Demographically, the book had twice the appeal among pastors born during the Baby Boom generation as among pastors from the Baby Bust cohort.
Not far behind was The Purpose Driven Church, an earlier volume by Pastor Warren that was listed by 15%. Its appeal was pretty consistent across all pastoral segments except Baby Bust pastors, among whom only 3% included this book among their top picks.

In reading the survey results there was no mention of Martin Luther, John Calvin, C.S. Lewis, Charles Spurgeon, Francis Schaeffer, John Stott, J.I. Packer, John Knox, Augustine. We need the meat that our Reformational forefathers left us in their writings. In many cases these men died for their beliefs - how dare they be demeaned as irrelevant now.

I don't begrudge the seeker sensitive churches - to a degree I even understand their reasoning. I just want more than what they provide. I want the close relationship with my pastors and teachers. I want the "family" feel. I want to be held accountable by my brothers and sisters. IMNSHO there isn't a contemporary worship song out there that holds a candle to "Amazing Grace", "How Great Thou Art", "Near the Cross", "Fairest Lord Jesus" or "Great is Thy Faithfulness". One thing I really resent about the "seeker sensitive" churches is the idea that just because something is older it has no place. I don't hold church tradition on a level with Scripture as some churches do - but that doesn't mean that tradition is bad. Our history is important - it brought us to where we are today.
And thanks to the good, sound Scriptural teaching I've received over the past years I know:
1. where to find those things I know to be important

2. that God doesn't need me (or anyone else) to sell Him

3. that God does expect certain things in our worship of Him and it isn't coffee, lights, big screens and sound systems. Soli Deo Gloria - God gets the glory not the building, the music or the marketing.

That article is very odd. You can get baptized, but why? There is no mention at all of God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit.

And some of his examples really only refer to affluent, southern Californian happily married couples.

I agree that he uses paraphrases and sometimes comes out of left field. But I can't agree here. We are using some of his Celebrate Recovery materials now in our addiction recovery group. It is certainly not just for the affluent or the happily married.
