Why is some music "evil"?

I think someone could do a paper or whatnot on the evil that is MTV-spawned pop music, but not much past that. :D

Seriously, though, no. The only 'evil' coming out of music would be whatever the artist intended to be there, if any in the first place. And that depends on the person, not the music.

I heard my grandparents talking to my mother about this earlier today. They feel that alot of music today is "evil". Why do people think or feel that way? Can music even BE evil?

Music can be used for evil, but it's not good or evil, in and of itself.

Kind of like a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

One slice has peanut butter ( the lyrics )

The other slice has jelly ( the music )

In order to have the final product the two have to be combined.

You can't have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich without each slice.

Thus you have the music and the lyrics which form the end product of evil.

Why is it so hard to figure out?

Music is amoral. It is not good or evil.

That said, many Christians have taken Platonic concept of a dichotemy between sacred and secular and mixed it in with theology, which forms a common heresy called gnosticism. In gnosticism, people believe that the sacred is better than the secular. This belief leads to a form of legalism where Christians flee all things secular.

If you hear Christians claiming that "secular" music is morally evil, in and of itself, they don't have a very solid understanding of theology, as this belief is rooted more in Greek philosophy than scripture.

Because in and of themselves, musical notes are not evil. And words are not evil.

Evil enters the picture when someone listens to it and does something evil. In which case, the music is still not evil, the evil thing that the person did is evil.

What if one slice has peanut butter, and the other slice has honey, is it still evil?
What about peanut butter and banana?

I'm intrigued by your new "Sandwich of the Apocolypse" theory, and I would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

I'm with you, I ask myself that question all the time. It always seems to be in the same threads you post in too, coincidentally.

Can the OP clarify the question a little more? Is there specific music being talked about, or a more specific concern that was brought up?
I hear people talking about music as though its something evil or to be feared and I really dont understand why. If its country...ehhh...I have to agree :) but why is some music considered evil by people?

IE: Genres like metal, punk, and hard rock.

I'll tell ya why. When I was a kid, you had bands like KISS, Black Sabbath, and Led Zepplin, all of which- allegedly- had ties to Satanism. Did they? Who knows.

Then, when I was a teenager, you had bands like Motley Crue who had an album called Shout At The Devil with a pentagram on the cover, and Slayer's Reign In BLood with a demon-head on the cover. Their marketing ploys worked: us teenagers scooped it up and the grown-ups gasped in horror over it.

Older people have, for the most part, always gasped in horror at rock music, from Elvis' first TV appearance when he was swiveling his hips, to the Beatles and their moppy hair, to KISS and their makeup and fire-spitting stage shows. On-and-on it goes.

I think this trend of being horrified by rock music will fade away as the current senior generations begin to pass on...
