Why is man's heart so desperately wicked?

I've got a question I can't answer. We all know that the bible tells us that man's heart is desperately wicked, who can know it? It is God who searches the heart. So why is man's heart so desperately wicked? I'm not disagreeing, because I know in my own life I don't even know my heart very well, and I do really sinful things as a result. I just don't understand why.

Maybe when sin entered into the world thru Adam and Eve, the heart of man was filled with fear instead of trust for God - and we are byproducts of that fear. I don't know really, just guessing.

What do you all think?

The way I see it is that before the fall Adam and Eve were God-centered beings who loved God and each other above themselves. By choosing to eat of the tree, they desired something for themselves that God had forbid, and therefore placed themselves above God.

As a result, man is born utterly self centered, as can be witnessed by looking at any young child... much of our growing up has to do with losing some of this self centered attitude and considering others. The Bible goes farther, it demands that we die to ourselves and live to serve God and others... this is God's desire, for our hearts to be reborn in selfless love for God and others.

Amen! The worrd tells us to live by the spirit so that we won't fulfill the desires of the flesh. If by the spirit of christ we put to death the misdeeds of the body, we will live. But if we live according to the flesh, we will reap destruction. We know that when adam and eve sinned, it was because they disobeyed God and sin entered the world. So we must realize the necessity of obedience to God, and daily, living by the spirit and not the flesh. We are only children of God through the person of christ, not by our own ways of thinking and going about things. Thank you for this post, it was encouraging tto hear that there is someone out there that actually speaks about christs requirements.

I have a good heart, like most people :)

I find it very demoralising walking around telling myself that god thinks I'm wicked? When I know I'm not??? be more positive and believe in yourself :)

Ok. Everything that you just said, goes against the word of God. We are wicked, the flesh is evil, and we are told by christ himself that we must deny ourselves daily, and take up our cross. Now why would he say that, if we have any good in us? What your saying, is that he didn't have to die on the cross, since we are already good without christ. There is nothing good in us, that is in our flesh. Paul said that, and he was used by God more than many other apostles. I know that my heart is desprately wicked and deceitful above all things. If it is that deceitful, than it could begin to make me believe that it is good, even though the worrd of God says otherwise. That is why we sow to the spirit rather than our earthly nature. We are told to believe in God, not ourselves.

I am thankful for the full knowledge of the wickedness within my heart and the day I realized that there was nothing I could do to save myself from it. I felt the very real fear that comes from knowing one is lost beyond hope of self rescue. Adrenaline pumping and tears pouring I hit the ground on my knees and pleaded my case to God, and you know what? My case had already been pleaded, my debt paid and my sin forgiven by the only one who could do it perfectly, Jesus Christ. I just had to realize my lost state and turn to Him in earnest.

Is my heart wicked today? Without the indwelling Holy Spirit absolutely. Do my actions reflect a wicked heart? At times, but more and more I am trying to be a disciple of Christ, not perfect, but saved anyways. I can tell you, I am a completely different man than I was before I accepted Christ.

A man tried to call christ good teacher, and Christ Jesus himself said: "why do you call me good? There is no one good, except for the father." Why do so many think of themselves as any good especially when even christ didn't let anyone call him good? Yet we look at ourselves in a way that makes us feel good, rather than humbly admitting that we are sinners, and in need of daily cleansing, not just once. "AS we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and then the blood of Jesus Christ is cleaning us from our sins." Only if were walking in the light and fellowship are we being cleansed. Its not we who are good, when we come to christ, but it is christ in us, is the only good thing in us. Nothing else. Salvation has nothing to do with us being good or better.

Paul said he was the chief of sinners. Anyone who thinks they have a good heart is self-deceived. We all sin daily and that isn't good. Thankfully, we are under grace and not law otherwise we would all end up in the lake of fire.

Yes offcourse I'm a good person, lmao. So are my little children and so is my wife. It saddens me that you have to tell yourself you are wicked and evil. Jesus is a light to my feet, my King and Messiah. He gives me strength, I don't cower before him because I am evil and wicked???? so sad that Christians are so far from reality?

Since hardly any of the disciples could read and since the new testament wasn't even written letalone compiled, I think i will go with the revelation that Jesus is tword he of god.

There can't be two words of god. It is either Jesus or a book?

So, Is it Jesus or a book?
Can't be both?

1 Thessalonians 2:13

And we also thank God continually because, when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men, but as it actually is, the word of God, which is at work in you who believe.

Anywhere where you have Gods words, it is called "the word of God". Jesus is the Word of God, as in the logos.

Where did you learn of Jesus? The bible, which is Gods word.

We all sin, that does not make us all evil and wicked. Why are so many Christians always "Glass half empty" kind of people????

Was Mary and Joseph wicked people? Did god choose wicked people to take care of the Massiah?

It's referring to Gods words, which are contained in the scripture. The bible contains the scripture, therefore it is the word of God.

Why can't you, or Mary or Joseph get into Heaven without Jesus? If you're a good person, God should let you in right?

Clearly you just ignored everything I said. I will say it again;

The Bible was non existent when this verse about the gospel of Jesus was written. The New testament hadn't even been written letalone compiled. So, Obviously Jesus is the word of God being referred to here. The apostles are giving them the word of God/Jesus.

You are trapped in the Truth, so try answering it the same way again, haha, the bible was non existent when this was written! So how is it refering to something that doesn't exist yet? Especially when we are given the Holy Ghost to lead and guide us, not a book.

Jesus is the Word. The Bible, from the beginning to the end tells us about him. His word is throughout both books. He has spoken it, thus it is his word. It is true, the Apostles didn't have the NT. They did have the Old. Our Lord quoted it, he even took some aside after his resurrection, showing the scriptures that pertained to him. The book is inspired by the Holy Spirit.

You are being disingenuous, you yourself quote from it. Without the Bible, you wouldn't know Jesus. Without the testimony of the Gospel, you would be lost. It is evident that you do believe in some of it. I am curious though, which parts do you throw away, which do you believe are true?
