Why is it that in todays soceity it is ok and glorified to be anything from a Homosexual, thug, gangster rapper, etc...and be glorified and almost envied by the media yest being a christian is not?
Look at the way that the media portrays christians...They call us all right wingers, or bible belters, or portray us like Reverend love-joy and Ned Flanders from the simpsons....Think of all the main stream Tv shows, from Queer eye for the straight guy to MTV's real world, where it is typical to see different people hooking up for casual sex with numerous different partners. yet this is all acceptable and "coveted" to a certain degree....
Why is this?
Why is it that christianity is chastized in the mainstream media and Networks....
First, I would argue that being homosexual is not something that is "envied"...just look at the 2004 election or the gay marriage debate. Although I question why you would include homosexuals along with thugs and gangster rappers.
Second, people "envy" things that are exotic - something that is totally different from everyday experience. Being Christian is not envied because pretty much everyone in America is already Christian (80+%). So, why would it be glorified if it is the norm? People like to set themselves apart or find something exciting. If they are already Christian, then why would they seek Christianity? The thrill is gone because everyone is Christian.
Third, the media delivers what sells. Audiences enjoy watching shows like Queer Eye and the Real World (although I've never seen casual sex on Queer Eye). Queer Eye is popular in the same way Trading Spaces or Extreme Home Makeover are popular: people like to watch people or houses be dramatically transformed (for the better) by "experts". They like the "instant improvement" charms these shows offer. As for the Real World and other reality TV shows, sex, drama, and fighting sell! People like to watch it! So, don't blame the media. They're just trying to make money. If you want to blame someone, blame the American people. We like to watch the shows the media is churning out. If we like watching EWTN-type shows, then that's what the media would produce. People complain that the media is "too liberal" (especially, the right wing FOX news - fair and balanced? give me a break?. Ummm...how does FOX - you know the station that has all those reality shows that trivialize everything from marriage to parenting- have a conservative, religous-right news station?). Well, if they are liberal, then what does that say about the American people?
We can't pray in our schools, disturbing nobody, and yet Oregon just passed a law that allows people to actually have sex and touch on stage in strip clubs. Actually having sex!!! They said this is "protected free speech" and an "expression of an opinion." Give me a break. The Ten Commandments are so shocking and discriminatory to people that they sued and had them removed from the public eye?, then they pass a law like this, it's just sickening. I find two men making-out and really going at it in the park (with children watching) very shocking. But I'm just an evil bigot if I say so. Where is our country headed? All I can say is don't look up to these people, these thugs and what have you. And watch the news, and media, through discerning eyes. God help up all.
Ummm...I don't see the problem in allowing strippers to perform sexual acts. People go to see those types of things in a strip club. I think it makes logical sense to allow them to do it. And, if you don't like it, then don't go to strip clubs. It's not like this stuff is out in the open. Strip clubs are pretty isolated in terms of who goes to them.
You're entitled to your opinion on seeing gay couples openly displaying their love for one another in public. But, if you're suggesting that should be made illegal then you are an "evil bigot". I find seeing lots of different kinds of people making out in public (where children can see) disgusting, but they have just as much right to kiss as anyone else. When so-called Christians say how "evil" homosexuality is, I often wonder "what would Jesus say?" Well, my readings of the Bible seem to suggest that Jesus said things like "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you". Would you want to be outlawed from kissing in public if someone found you shocking? Would you want the government to say that who you can or cannot marry or find companionship with (well, as long as that person was a consenting adult)? Would you want people to tell you that your sexual preferences for consenting adults are unnatural (is love even a natural quality? other animals don't love, so only humans do. and, since history has so many examples of openly bisexual and homosexual socieities that predate the stigmas created by Christianity, are these sexual orientations unnatural?) I think the answer to these questions is no. Also, didn't Jesus befriend and bless the "social outcastes" of his time - like the sick and the poor? Didn't he say that we should love our neighbors? So, why are "Christians" so adamant on promoting discrimination and hate? I think this behavior is very un-Christian and Jesus would be very sad to see that his "followers" were engaging in it.
Everyone should read reverend b's post because it made a lot of sense.
The First Amendment protects our right to freedom of speech and religion. That means the government should protect our right to say and believe what we want. It doesn't mean the government should help certain groups with their agendas or spread their message - that would be the complete opposite of its duty. The government works for the people and the people believe many things. Suppose a Hindu child is in a school where Christian prayers or Bible readings are recited at the beginning of each class. Don't you think that he would immediately feel like an outsider or become embarrassed of his religion? A government institution, like a school, should not make any of its citizens feel uncomfortable or embarrassed with their religious beliefs. This is why school prayer is illegal. Similarly, how would a Hindu family feel if the Ten Commandments were in front of Town Hall? Town Hall, after all, is "public land" that is by definition owned by everyone. They are good American citizens who pay their taxes and follow the laws, but their government is endorsing (at least implicity) that another religion is superior to their own. So, that's why having the Ten Commandments out on public property is illegal. If you want your child to pray or if you want to display the Ten Commandments, then do it on your own property. Leave the public space for the people - all the people.
