Why is it Cool to vote for Obama?

I would be for compulsory voting except that there are too many people who don't bother to inform themselves of the issues and would just vote for very superficial reasons (too many people who do vote already do that) like who they would want to have a beer with or what someone's middle name is.

hey i had a really interesting discussion with an American friend about this. I'm of the same opinion it should also be illegal not to vote in America (and in the UK/rest of 1st world for that matter)

My American friend raised an excelent point that a system like that would mean the the 70% (his estimate) of the American public that dosent know a thing about politics and just votes off charisma or votes republican automatically and blindly because they are 'Christian' and this pressure exists in the church, would decide the fate of the country, not the educated minority. The quality of properganda would decide the election result, not the quality of the policies.

I agreed how that would not work in its current state in America. In Australia, we are taught from school age that politics are very important and its important to know whats going on and to be involved (not like rallies and stuff, but awareness and to have opinions). I remember in grade 7 (age 12) going on a school field trip to the state parliment to learn all about how the political system works and why voting is important and required. We also got to meet some of the people involved too.

Also in my state education, i was taught about the American political system and how it differes from the Australian and British model.

Charlie,

I would also like to say that some of us do not believe those are jokes. I have said that and I am not joking or trying to make a play on fears. I have a deep mistrust of his motives and I do believe he would get into bed with terrorists. That being said if I say Mohammad Osama then, I am expressing my view.

I am not trying to undermine his character. I don't believe the man has any.

Where does the vitriol come from? What facts are there he would have anything to do with terrorists? And when did Muslim=terrorist? Plenty of Muslims are not terrorists and the ones who are passionate about their faith are horrified about the actions of those Muslims who use religion as an excuse to do the things they do.

Vitriol? The only vitriol I see in this thread is from the Obama supporters and especially the pretensious non-American know-it-alls.

The main reason I will probably never consider voting for a dem is the blatant hypocrisy. They can dish it but they can't take it. (Proof of this statement will no doubt be found when I am reported for my above comments by crybabies who can't handle it).

Now, how much this tidbit weighs into any one person's opinion of Obama's credentials is up to each individual person. But the link is there. Personally, I find that it shows us something important about Obama's character and real agenda.

And to whoever said Obama has Christian policies or "lines up with Christianity".... Anyone who can sit under Rev. Wright for 20 years doesn't have a clue what Christianity is, much less have any desire to live by it.

The Weather Underground? Are they talking about the Weathermen? The radical anti-war youth movement of the 60's and 70's. So a member of the Weathermen threw a fundraiser for Obama, big deal. The Weathermen have been defunct since the early 80's. The article even says that Ayers has become a respected professor in the past twenty years. Are all his students now linked to terrorism for the rest of their lives?

Like I said, each person will decide how important this piece of information is to them.

The truth is that all of us tend to surround ourselves with those in agreement with us... birds of a feather flock together.

If you start taking a look at the people with whom Obama has chosen to associate himself, and take money from, and learn "christianity" from... we start to see an interesting picture of radical and even dangerous ideology.

Why do people think that we're all choosing politicians based on abortion issues? Bewilders me. Me reading up on Obama is what convinced me that I didn't want to vote for him. o_o To tell you the truth, I was undecided before then.

I agree with Tamara. A lot of these connections he has with these people do worry me, and rightfully so.
Along with the teachings he's been brought up with in his church (which I'll elaborate on later) and several other controversial names he's been associated with (Rezco, Frank Davis Marshall, Meeks, Khalidi and more)...I have the right to consider what kind of affect these pastors, friends and mentor have/had on him.

Regardless of what state American is in, I sharply disagree with a pastor saying for God to... America. Or "The US of KKK." And to say that 20 years of that doesn't have an affect on someone? If I heard that from the pulpit, there is no doubt in my mind that I'd get up and leave. I personally believe in a leader that prays for America and asks for God to bless her.

On top of that, back liberation theology and its teachings of how white man is the oppressor and the black man the new chosen people (Israel). No offense to race or anything like that...but I do critique any theology that twists God's word.

I find it odd that now, as a candidate, he is beginning to distance himself from those people. A political move?

ok.......if Obama is dodgy because he is 'in bed with the terrorists' etc. where does that leave the Bush family?? What do you think of their ties with the Saudi royal family (through oil of course)? they're one of the most fundamentally Islamic regeims on the planet. and the Bush family is connected to the Bin Laden family, hence why they were alowed out of the USA straight after 9/11 when the rest of the country was in lock down. but these truths are inconveinant for the religious right, so they will be ignored and brushed aside.

I'll make the pro Obama argument easy to understand for those under the infulence of the far right's ideological grip. i'll make it easy by thinking like one. I'll skip anything to do with actual policy and go straight for what matters to them most......here it goes...

"I shouldnt vote for McCain, because he divorced his first wife after she was crippled in a car accident and married a 20 years younger woman a month later. Divorce goes against the bible and our family values, so i cannot have our commander in cheif be a person who thinks its ok to go against the bible and American family values. I also think Palin isnt suitable, because her 17 year old, unmarried daughter fell pregnant. Sexual education is not something the government should be in charge of, or the schools, its the sole responsibility of the parents to teach their kids about sex. Palin failed to do this correctly, so how can i trust someone so complacent about family values with our nations security?"

it is our concern. very much so. When we see the pain and suffering inflicted by Bush's foregin policy etc, we are concerned as Christians and human beings for our fellow man.

We are concerned when the American government fails to reign in American business greed and that failure causes a world wide economic downturn (credit crunch) which causes people in the UK and Australia to loose jobs and go without.

oh belive me, it is our business and it is our concern. but of course........not our vote. which is a shame, because Obama would win in a landslide if the world got to vote.

That was just one detail? Who says we don't have anything to say on policy? That's funny...It's similar to a previous remark of how we are only concerned with abortion. But I guess it's easier for people to knock down our views by constraining it to one aspect. That is fallacious.

Said nicely a few posts above. I do NOT believe in the far left socialist ideologies, and I reserve my right to think that way. I do not agree with Obama's policies. However I never care to convince anyone to think the same way I do; I'm just freely stating my opinion and reasons as a part of this discussion. I do not go into the Obama camp and disagree with how they view him. It would be nice if some people could give us some respect of being able to have an opinion, instead of being made to feel as if our reasons are not valid enough or assuming that we only look at certain details.

Pu-leaze. The President may be the Commander in Chief, but that doesn't mean he has completely unilateral and unlimited control over all the weapons in the US.

The reason America is the way it is (world leader) is because of the American people - especially those who have gone before us. Working hard and using our freedoms to get us somewhere.

We got this way, so can you.

Maybe you should focus on improving your own countries and then you wouldn't have to worry about what America does.
