• The General Mental Health Forum is now a Read Only Forum. As we had two large areas making it difficult for many to find, we decided to combine the Mental Health & the Recovery sections of the forum into Mental Health & Recovery as a whole. Physical Health still remains as it's own area within the entire Recovery area.

If you are having struggles, need support in a particular area that you aren't finding a specific recovery area forum, you may find the General Struggles forum a great place to post. Any any that is related to emotions, self-esteem, insomnia, anger, relationship dynamics due to mental health and recovery and other issues that don't fit better in another forum would be examples of topics that might go there.

If you have spiritual issues related to a mental health and recovery issue, please use the Recovery Related Spiritual Advice forum. This forum is designed to be like Christian Advice, only for recovery type of issues. Recovery being like a family in many ways, allows us to support one another together. May you be blessed today and each day.

ok seriously, why does God have to be so difficult and complicated! I mean seriously, I ask him to show up and help me, and he doesn't. Does communicating with him have to be this hard? Why do I have to read the bible in order to talk to him at all? Why can't I talk to him like a normal conversation. I know I'm lazy and ignorate for not reading the bible. It's such a pain to read cuz sometimes it mentions something that I don't like. Yes, I ask that advocate who is "supposed" to help? Yes, I mean the holy spirit when I say advocate. Anyway, example. This doesn't apply to me, but I'm going to use it as an example: "CHILDREN OBEY YOUR PARENTS IN THE LORD FOR THIS IS RIGHT". Ok then, nice commandment. Ok advocate! Give me some of that holy spirit power! (nothing happens). What that heck! What's the point of having an advocate (holy spirit) if he is not going to do anything. Wait! Is it my fault? Have I sinned a little too much? Is God just plain angry with me? Well he must be, because I don't feel any of his love. I ask him to come, and nope doesn't show up. I guess he doesn't have to come me cuz he is God and he can do whatever he wants and doesn't have to listen to a worthless wretch like me. I'm just not good enough for him. That's the only explanation that I can think of. Or is it in his nature to try and play games? Seriously, what am I supposed to do here? Does he really have to be this difficult. I guess so. I don't know how to get rid of this stupid guilt cuz my stupid brain loves to be guilt tripped. "Oh no it's not your brain! it's the holy spirit. He is making you feel guilty. It's a good thing to feel guilty" That's it? That's all the holy spirit does? I thought he was supposed to "help me"? Well that doesn't sound like help to me. I want him to help me want to do what is right not give me a guilty conscience that eats my life away! Why is it simply, "obey me!" and not "ask the advocate, and he will help you obey me!" I know I probably went a little far with what I have been saying. I'm just frustrated and my relationship with God is a wreck and I don't know how to fix this

Unfortunately (from our point of view that is) God doesn't do that for anybody. If He did then no faith would be needed at all. Instead he uses the Bible, people and circumstances to speak to us. Perhaps you need to take a step back and try and see the bigger picture? I know that is hard when strong emotions are involved. I am a very feeling creature as well.

Why do I have to read the bible in order to talk to him at all? Why can't I talk to him like a normal conversation.
God has revealed to mankind all the knowledge and wisdom He wants us to know through the Bible.
I know I'm lazy and ignorate for not reading the bible.
You don't have to swallow it all in one gulp you know. Small bits well digested will help you far more. Think of the major issue you are dealing with, decide the topic that covers it, google that keyword and so on.

Now for me -when I came back to God a few years ago I had to totally renew my mind Romans 12:2 I was thinking so much like the world I needed God to reprogram my mind. Which book deals with real wisdom? Proverbs of course.
For one whole month I read one chapter a few times in different versions using BibleGateway.com. I would notice one verse stuck out at me. I then would google for sermons dealing with that one chapter and verse.
e.g. Proverbs 4:14-17 I was very convicted and challenged by that passage. I had made excuses for tolerating very difficult friendships with downright nasty people by telling myself I was just kind - that's all. I then would listen to a sermon like ones on this list Proverbs 4 Sermons - SermonAudio.com. Yes reading one chapter of Proverbs for a month and all the it did take a lot of work and time - but now I will always recognise each time when I think or hear someone say something that contradicts God's wisdom.

It's such a pain to read cuz sometimes it mentions something that I don't like.
Yes, sinners would say the same thing.... i.e. all of us.

What's the point of having an advocate (holy spirit) if he is not going to do anything.
God has blessed us with free will so we are never going to be his robots. We will always have to decide what we do. You sound like you have a lot to overcome and so it may seem to you that you are not getting anywhere right now. Just stopping major sinning patterns can be a major step forward. God is always there for you to call out to 1 corinthians 10:13 If you need His help from second to second then He will be with you, whether you feel it or not.

Wait! Is it my fault? Have I sinned a little too much? Is God just plain angry with me? ....[snip]...... I'm just not good enough for him.
If you have confessed your sins to God 1 john 1:9 then know that Jesus is there for you Hebrews 4:14-16

If you keep being accused and told how terrible you are after you know you have repented then you are being accused by your enemy Satan and NOT by God. 1 Peter 5:8 Commentary

I gave you that last link because I think you need to read a lot about how Satan attacks us. You need to learn the difference between Satan's accusations and personal attacks (keeping us down and out), and the Holy Spirit's gentle reminders and guidance towards you becoming what God wants you to be.
God is love, and will speak love to you - sometimes it will sound like rebuke Proverbs 27:5-6, sometimes it will be encouragement 1 peter 5:7 (like it sounds like you're in desperate need of!), but it will always be drawing you to Him and making you grow stronger in Him. It will never be aiming to destroy you and your faith - that is always from Satan.

ya, thanks for this. I do have a lot to overcome for sure. I guess I feel somewhat convicted, because I feel that God is wanting me to use what he has given me (my brain). I know you don't have to be smart to have a good relationship with God, it's just that it's my nature to kind over think things instead of simply trusting God and leaving it in his hands. I'm just feeling for me personally I need to study more, and not just the bible, but other christian books as well. So, maybe I need I need to use this instrument which has clearly been poisoned with garbage and start filling it with truth. This is probably going to take me a while for sure, but hopefully I can start taking a few steps in the right direction.

Amen Joey Downunder. But I would like to interject here and say Drag3049, don't forget to apologize to the Lord for your attitute toward the Holy Spirit. Your words was a spit at Him. The Lord will answer when He answers; Can the clay tell the potter how to shape it. No, the clay bends and shapes as the potter molds it into what ever HE WILLS. Humble yourself and be patient; if He does not come when you want Him; wait until he does. The Lord loves you and He is concerned about you. But you can not force his hand. I hope you don't mind my reply; I only speak the truth. Amen and so be it.

Job 26:2

“How you have helped the powerless! How you have saved the weak!"

Pslam 6:2

Have compassion on me, Lord, for I am weak.Heal me, Lord, for my bones are in agony.

Psalm 68:30

Rebuke these enemy nations—these wild animals lurking in the reeds, this herd of bulls among the weaker calves.Make them bring bars of silver in humble tribute.Scatter the nations that delight in war.

Psalm 72:13

He feels pity for the weak and the needy, and he will rescue them.

Pslam 73:26

My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart;he is mine forever.

Psalm 103:13-15

13 The Lord is like a father to his children,
tender and compassionate to those who fear him.
14 For he knows how weak we are;
he remembers we are only dust.
15 Our days on earth are like grass;
like wildflowers, we bloom and die.

Psalm 136:22-24

22 a special possession to his servant Israel.
His faithful love endures forever.
23 He remembered us in our weakness.
His faithful love endures forever.
24 He saved us from our enemies.
His faithful love endures forever.

Isaiah 35:2-4

2 Yes, there will be an abundance of flowers
and singing and joy!
The deserts will become as green as the mountains of Lebanon,
as lovely as Mount Carmel or the plain of Sharon.
There the Lord will display his glory,
the splendor of our God.
3 With this news, strengthen those who have tired hands,
and encourage those who have weak knees.
4 Say to those with fearful hearts,
“Be strong, and do not fear,
for your God is coming to destroy your enemies.
He is coming to save you.”

Isaiah 40:28-30New Living Translation (NLT)

28 Have you never heard?
Have you never understood?
The Lord is the everlasting God,
the Creator of all the earth.
He never grows weak or weary.
No one can measure the depths of his understanding.
29 He gives power to the weak
and strength to the powerless.
30 Even youths will become weak and tired,
and young men will fall in exhaustion.

Isaiah 53:3-5

3 He was despised and rejected—
a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief.
We turned our backs on him and looked the other way.
He was despised, and we did not care.
4 Yet it was our weaknesses he carried;
it was our sorrows that weighed him down.
And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God,
a punishment for his own sins!
5 But he was pierced for our rebellion,
crushed for our sins.
He was beaten so we could be whole.
He was whipped so we could be healed.

Isaiah 59:1-3

New Living Translation (NLT)

Isaiah 59

Warnings against Sin

1 Listen! The Lord’s arm is not too weak to save you,
nor is his ear too deaf to hear you call.
2 It’s your sins that have cut you off from God.
Because of your sins, he has turned away
and will not listen anymore.
3 Your hands are the hands of murderers,
and your fingers are filthy with sin.
Your lips are full of lies,
and your mouth spews corruption.

Ezekiel 34:15-17

New Living Translation (NLT)

15 I myself will tend my sheep and give them a place to lie down in peace, says the Sovereign Lord. 16 I will search for my lost ones who strayed away, and I will bring them safely home again. I will bandage the injured and strengthen the weak. But I will destroy those who are fat and powerful. I will feed them, yes—feed them justice!
17 “And as for you, my flock, this is what the Sovereign Lord says to his people: I will judge between one animal of the flock and another, separating the sheep from the goats.

Micah 4:6-8

New Living Translation (NLT)

Israel’s Return from Exile

6 “In that coming day,” says the Lord,
“I will gather together those who are lame,
those who have been exiles,
and those whom I have filled with grief.
7 Those who are weak will survive as a remnant;
those who were exiles will become a strong nation.
Then I, the Lord, will rule from Jerusalem
as their king forever.”
8 As for you, Jerusalem,
the citadel of God’s people,
your royal might and power
will come back to you again.
The kingship will be restored
to my precious Jerusalem.

Zephaniah 3:19

New Living Translation (NLT)

19 And I will deal severely with all who have oppressed you.
I will save the weak and helpless ones;
I will bring together
those who were chased away.
I will give glory and fame to my former exiles,
wherever they have been mocked and shamed.

Zechariah 12:8

New Living Translation (NLT)

8 On that day the Lord will defend the people of Jerusalem; the weakest among them will be as mighty as King David! And the royal descendants will be like God, like the angel of the Lord who goes before them!

Romans 8:2-4

New Living Translation (NLT)

2 And because you belong to him, the power of the life-giving Spirit has freed you from the power of sin that leads to death. 3 The law of Moses was unable to save us because of the weakness of our sinful nature. So God did what the law could not do. He sent his own Son in a body like the bodies we sinners have. And in that body God declared an end to sin’s control over us by giving his Son as a sacrifice for our sins. 4 He did this so that the just requirement of the law would be fully satisfied for us, who no longer follow our sinful nature but instead follow the Spirit.

Romans 8:25-27

New Living Translation (NLT)

25 But if we look forward to something we don’t yet have, we must wait patiently and confidently.)
26 And the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness. For example, we don’t know what God wants us to pray for. But the Holy Spirit prays for us with groanings that cannot be expressed in words. 27 And the Father who knows all hearts knows what the Spirit is saying, for the Spirit pleads for us believers in harmony with God’s own will.

Romans 14

The Danger of Criticism

1 Accept other believers who are weak in faith, and don’t argue with them about what they think is right or wrong. 2 For instance, one person believes it’s all right to eat anything. But another believer with a sensitive conscience will eat only vegetables. 3 Those who feel free to eat anything must not look down on those who don’t. And those who don’t eat certain foods must not condemn those who do, for God has accepted them.

1 Corinthians 2:2-4

New Living Translation (NLT)

2 For I decided that while I was with you I would forget everything except Jesus Christ, the one who was crucified. 3 I came to you in weakness—timid and trembling. 4 And my message and my preaching were very plain. Rather than using clever and persuasive speeches, I relied only on the power of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 4:9-11

New Living Translation (NLT)

9 Instead, I sometimes think God has put us apostles on display, like prisoners of war at the end of a victor’s parade, condemned to die. We have become a spectacle to the entire world—to people and angels alike.
10 Our dedication to Christ makes us look like fools, but you claim to be so wise in Christ! We are weak, but you are so powerful! You are honored, but we are ridiculed. 11 Even now we go hungry and thirsty, and we don’t have enough clothes to keep warm. We are often beaten and have no home.

1 Corinthians 9:21-23

New Living Translation (NLT)

21 When I am with the Gentiles who do not follow the Jewish law, I too live apart from that law so I can bring them to Christ. But I do not ignore the law of God; I obey the law of Christ.
22 When I am with those who are weak, I share their weakness, for I want to bring the weak to Christ. Yes, I try to find common ground with everyone, doing everything I can to save some. 23 I do everything to spread the Good News and share in its blessings.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44

New Living Translation (NLT)

42 It is the same way with the resurrection of the dead. Our earthly bodies are planted in the ground when we die, but they will be raised to live forever. 43 Our bodies are buried in brokenness, but they will be raised in glory. They are buried in weakness, but they will be raised in strength. 44 They are buried as natural human bodies, but they will be raised as spiritual bodies. For just as there are natural bodies, there are also spiritual bodies.

2 Corinthians 11:29-31

New Living Translation (NLT)

29 Who is weak without my feeling that weakness? Who is led astray, and I do not burn with anger?
30 If I must boast, I would rather boast about the things that show how weak I am. 31 God, the Father of our Lord Jesus, who is worthy of eternal praise, knows I am not lying.

2 Corinthians 12:9

New Living Translation (NLT)

9 Each time he said, “My grace is all you need. My power works best in weakness.” So now I am glad to boast about my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ can work through me.

2 Corinthians 12:10

New Living Translation (NLT)

10 That’s why I take pleasure in my weaknesses, and in the insults, hardships, persecutions, and troubles that I suffer for Christ. For when I am weak, then I am strong.

2 Corinthians 13:2-4

New Living Translation (NLT)

2 I have already warned those who had been sinning when I was there on my second visit. Now I again warn them and all others, just as I did before, that next time I will not spare them.
3 I will give you all the proof you want that Christ speaks through me. Christ is not weak when he deals with you; he is powerful among you. 4 Although he was crucified in weakness, he now lives by the power of God. We, too, are weak, just as Christ was, but when we deal with you we will be alive with him and will have God’s power.

Philippians 3:20-21

New Living Translation (NLT)

20 But we are citizens of heaven, where the Lord Jesus Christ lives. And we are eagerly waiting for him to return as our Savior. 21 He will take our weak mortal bodies and change them into glorious bodies like his own, using the same power with which he will bring everything under his control.

1 Thessalonians 5:13-15

New Living Translation (NLT)

13 Show them great respect and wholehearted love because of their work. And live peacefully with each other.
14 Brothers and sisters, we urge you to warn those who are lazy. Encourage those who are timid. Take tender care of those who are weak. Be patient with everyone.
15 See that no one pays back evil for evil, but always try to do good to each other and to all people.

Hebrews 4:14-16

New Living Translation (NLT)

Christ Is Our High Priest

14 So then, since we have a great High Priest who has entered heaven, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold firmly to what we believe. 15 This High Priest of ours understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do, yet he did not sin. 16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

I'm sorry, but I don't need any more lies. God is very much interested in help me in my weakness. Oh, and by the way, I worshiped him last night. I came to worship him in "weakness" and with a repentant heart.

Yes, Praise God! And well Done!
I read these verses last night after posting as well:

Isa 40:27 - Isa 40:31
Isa 40:27 Why do you say, O Jacob, and complain, O Israel, "My way is hidden from the LORD; my cause is disregarded by my God"?
Isa 40:28 Do you not know? Have you not heard? The LORD is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
Isa 40:29 He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
Isa 40:30 Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
Isa 40:31 but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles;they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Niv.

We sometimes forget that we are not the centre of the universe to whom God must deign to meet our every wish and desire. His immensity and otherness is beyond our comprehension. It's only in Jesus ad his accommodation to our limitations that we get some more detailed glimpses into what God is like.

And, what subject at school or university can we master without effort?

Hey buddy, I just wanted to give you some good news! It's gonna be okay!!

You can definitely talk to him in a normal conversation! In fact I highly recommend it! The bible is a great resource for us Christians but you know what, most of the stuff which was written for you (the new testament) was written by Paul who received the message straight from God! The bible says the holy spirit will teach us all things! The bible of course is the final authority but you can hear straight from God just by learning to tune your ear to hear him! Again, the bible says His sheep will hear His voice! You can hear God you just need to learn to recognise his voice!

There's so much to say about the goodness of God and not enough space to type! No God's not angry with you! He loved us before we accepted him, how much more does he love us now we are sons! Jesus paid for sin on the cross. Period. Sin is no longer in God's radar! Gasp I hear from the Christians! It's true! Sin has been dealt with and now God sees us through the blood of his son Jesus! we are the righteousness of Christ! There's nothing you can do to stop God loving you, smiling down on you and celebrating your life! You are the apple of his eye! That's the gospel! It's good news!

The holy spirit will never condemn you and make you feel guilty. The bible says he is our comforter, there is NO condemnation for those in Christ Jesus!

The Christian walk is a walk of faith but most Christians make it out to be a walk of perseverance, struggling their way to heaven! God is awesome and if you begin to understand how great and loving and kind he is, and what he has done for you, reading the bible won't be a chore but a blessing! I would recommend getting into some of paul's letters like Ephesians or collossians and start to believe what you read, it's all truth!

If you have any questions I'd love to help you walk this one out and help you see God in all his goodness! Oh and one last thing, you can't accidentally blaspheme the holy spirit, he's not a temperamental schizophrenic! He know's where you're at and wants to help! If you ever blasphemed the holy spirit you wouldn't even care if you had!

Grace and peace
Dan
