Why is God often seen as an old man?

I guess that image primarily comes to mind because He has been around for so long that it makes the most sense to people to picture him as an old man.

As an old white male? There's a lot of history behind that. Christianity has been spread predominantly by European colonizers, and patriarchy (based on Roman culture) has deemed God has "male". But God is just as much as an old native American female as much as an old white male. God is neither.

You are correct, it has to do with the Roman Catholic church.

I guess because God is the "Father" and "Creator" of all things, and the Universe bears it. I don't know why he is portrayed as an old white male. Should he really be depicted in any way?

It's because he is the father and creator of all things visible and invisible.

It's easier for people to see God as an old man because we are always taught to respect our elders. If he were depicted as a younger bloke we wouldn't perhaps fear him as much.

Just my thoughts.

Portrayals are misleading. For example, the devil is portrayed as a red-skinned guy with horns but he is actually beautiful - extreme pride of his beauty was one of the things that made him evil. Therefore, you should ignore the portrayals of God because they may be false.
