Why is being in the music ministry so hard?

Something for the Music Minister to examine:

TAKING THE WINGS OF PRAISE

...and a poem:

Let's Sing, Together

Come now, together,
Let’s sing for the joy of it.
Gather with brothers
And sisters of grace.

Tell of the stories
Of Jesus the marvelous
Captain of courage
Who died in our place.

Whate’er the trouble
Preceding the glad refrain
Soon it will vanish
Like mists of the morn.

Saints with new vistas
Of God in the commonplace.
Shaking the tambourine,
Sounding the horn.

I use to be in "worship band," but I personaly think that worship can become pretty bland and boring if no one applies their talents to the music. Who knows, my dad says he's going to start a church so maybe I will be leading worship, idk? All I saying is I dont like the idea that worship music for churches has to be "contemporay christian,". Why this way?

Well that is what I think...

Many people think that the music ministry is just to play or sing up there and that's it. But it's much more than that. It's about being christian 24/7....everywhere you go. Reading the bible everyday and praying...trying to keep a strong connection with God. I am a university student and there are a lot of temptations here. And battles too. For example, people say bad words all around me....and it got stuck in my mind....and I ask myself...(i play bass at the youth service every sunday) why am I going up to play when I am battling with this? Because from what I know, the altar is a holy place and we as the musicians, singers, and ministers need to be right with God...and to not let sin brake that connection between one and God. I have been told that whatever you are feeling, you are transmitting that to the people. Sometimes, I don't want to go up there, but I feel that it is I don't want to say an obligation...a commitment to be up there and at practice every weekend. If I don't play the bass for that one sunday, the WHOLE band won't play that sunday and another band will back us up. There are no back up bassits and I am responsible for being up there and "filling" the group....because the band cannot play without a bassit. Any comments, suggestions, thoughts?

Take a deep breath and relax. God loves you and your doing a great job. If you have to be perfect to be in ministry than no one would be.

I'm on the tech side of ministry but I'm also a musician (drummer!) and it can be tough at times to determine what the musicians, as well as the leaders, need. Ministry can be frustrating and also very draining; it's easy to get burned out on church and service when all you hear are criticisms and negative feedback. Don't give up though! God can use what you're doing and if you do it with a sincere heart for His glory then He'll bless it.:)

Jessiemusical, lots of things going on here, I think.
1) Prepping your heart and spending time before worship forgiving...asking for forgiveness...prepping your heart and mind for where you are going to be will help a lot. NO ONE is perfect, no, not one...but when we mess up we need to ask God to forgive us and renew a right spirit within us in order to be in the best place to direct others to the Throne of God in worship.
2) If the expectation is that you HAVE to be there every Sunday and you are not okay with that, you might need to have a real gut-honest talk with the worship pastor. There are ways to fill out the bass-line in the absence of a bass player. Plus, if we keep saying "yes" all the time, it doesn't give others a chance to step up and help fill a role.
I hope this helps. Been where you are...just don't forget to worship Him in your own way in your own time, alone...that's what keeps it real and fresh and worth the sacrifice and struggle.
God bless you abundantly, in Jesus' name!

Thank you for the wonderful idea! The only thing is our church is small, and we don't have any bass singers anywhere in the church. But this is one of the best ideas I have heard for a ministry, and a choir! I will pray and ask God for his blessings on this!

Agreed, I thought the idea of having a bass/baritone vocalist (as a temporary replacement) is pretty good too.

That's the reason we have only SAT vocal parts in contemporary: because the bass singer and the bass player clobber each other.
OR, train the bass singer to play bass; or vice versa.

If a good bass singer plays bass, it will be a much more melodic bass line.

That's a pretty neat idea, LOL.
I have lived it.

As a teen, I trained under Ken Turner of the Blackwood Bros quartet, and also had opportunity to sing with JD Sumner (Stamps) and Richard Sturbin (now of the Oak Ridge Boys). Those guys are bass singing royalty.

So when we started doing contemporary in the mid 70s, I could pick up a bass line on almost any style. (not just country or gospel) In the early 80s our music minister wanted me to learn to play bass. It was a quick study. I started playing what I sang, and everyone commented on how my bass was not "boring."

Our worship isn't about how we feel about our lives but how we feel about God.
We are not there in any vain and futile pretence at purity and righteousness in our own strength but to proclaim his righteousness given to us at the cross and offer thanks and praise.
When the enemy tells me how unworthy I am I thank him for reminding me just how much I need my Lord God!
