when the Vatican Catholic Church or a member of it shows me that the following doctrines were taught by the Early Church, I'll believe that it is the one true Church founded by Christ:
1. The supremacy of the Patriarch of Rome over the universal Church, his being the Vicar of Christ, and his infallibility as a teacher of the universal church.
2. the immaculate conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
3. purgatory
4. the definition of the transformation of the elements of the Eucharist into the Body and Blood of the Lord (I know the Early Church taught the Real Presence, but it didn't teach transubstantiation)
I'll start with these, when quotes from the Apostles and the early Church Fathers are given to show that these beliefs and practices were universally held by the early church, I'll start even considering that the Vatican Catholic Church may be the Church founded by Christ.

The way it looks, God commands for a husband and wife to be forever faithful to each other, .....but there seems to be forgiveness and terms for divorce as well.

Iollian, this is the Pauline Priviledge we talked about earlier . . .

What I said earlier is just as true right now . .

What Paul is speaking of is the ending of a NON sacramental marriage. . a marriage that was not brought before God to join together . . it was done when they were heathens . . . they were joined by man, not God.

Divorce in such a situation leaves the believing spouse free to marry . . .

The reason this is not a contradiction to Jesus' command is that Jesus said what GOD has joined together, let no man put assunder.

The operative word there is "God"

The marriage Paul is speaking of was not put together by God, but by man.

What man puts together, man can put assunder . . . Marriages among the heathans were not convenants, but legal contracts . . put together by man apart from God.

So no . . this prepresnts no exception to Jesus' words and command and warning to us.

Italians, they do not eat meat on Fridays - every Christmas Eve is the 7 seafood dinner and on we have to eat a spoonful of lentils which are cooked like beans.

What you are doing is holding Roman Catholic doctrines against those of the Orthodox Church so that you may legitimize your claim that the Orthodox Church blesses and sanctifies the marriage of adulterers. Yes we can and we already have . . . if you take time to read through the thread and read the evidence that has been presented in our defense, and the arguments that have been made in defense of Orthodox belief regarding remarriage after divorce, our claims are well justified.

We have posted some of the history behind the changing of the doctrine in the East . . . it is not in line with the Early Church at all.

Biblical defense is first predicated on Jesus' teaching, command, and warning.

What God has joined together let no man put assunder.

He that divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery. He that marries her commits adultery.

Now, what no orthodox poster here has been able to do is prove why the Orthodox Church has the right

to put assunder what God has joined together, and
to permit divorced people from marriages which God joined together to remarry and commit the sin of audltery.

Please explain this.
