Why honor?

Ex 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me

Why then would He then tell you to honor your parents?

Ex 20:12 Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

Is it because it is the ideal even when parent's fail? In honoring, the return to righteousness comes to the child's understanding.

it is because of authority, as Yhvh has put it.

just like the owner of a slave has authority over a slave, and Yhvh and Yahshua both say together as One
for the slave to obey the master, even if the master is unrighteous, and not just so, but to actually and truly obey as if obeying Yahshua Himself. this is right and true.

likewise the parent has authority over the child. if the child rebels against the authority that Yhvh has decreed, the penalty is very severe, sometimes death (not by man's hand, i think, these days; but none-the-less very severe still, by Yhvh's Decree and by Yhvh's Doing_)

the so-called 'christians' who do not and who continue to refuse to recognise Yhvh's Authority are in for a very big surprise, and trouble beyond their wildest thoughts and most vivid imaginations.
same for the 'christians' who substitute a 'religious' authority not found in Yhvh's Plan for Yhvh's simply put authority - like honoring the traditions of man over Yhvh's Word(which most of the world 'christians' do, whether wittingly or not, Yhvh knows (but many of them ADMIT IT! (even here on the internet!) )

visionary, this is exactly why it says to honor your parents, but not to obey your parents. There is no commandment to obey your parents (or anyone else for that matter). To honor means to treat with respect. When the children of a society stop treating their parents with respect, no matter how wrong their parents may be, that society will generally lose the concept of respect and will fall apart.

I believe that Ex 20:5 had to do with parents having sexual relations with their children, that is what would take 3 or 4 generations to resolve genetic deformities. These acts at times came through Idol worship.

I think it's because nobody really respects you if you dishonor your parents, since there are so many orphans out there. I know I dishonor my mother a lot by talking about how much I hate her, and the truth is nobody really even wants to hear it. I only talk about how I really feel about her though online or to my immediate family, cuz talking [bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse][bless and do not curse] about your family, even if it's true, often makes people distance themselves from you.

Yes VIZ, I must also ask what "honoring" in the commandment(Ex.20:12) means, full meaning, as you understand it?

Under the Original Hebrew Covenant the sins of Hebrew parents that bow down and worship false gods/idols usually resulted in their children also becoming so degraded as to hate God. On the other hand would God punish Spiritually born again children (Jewish or Gentile) that choose to Love God and their fellow man under the One New Man Covenant?

Matthew 7:11
If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!

Spiritually born again children of their Heavenly Father do not purposely choose to hate their parents by verbally or physically abusing them. Instead they forgive them, pray for them and as a new creation in Christ love those that are unlovable.

Matthew 5:39-42
39 But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.
40 If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
41 And whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.
42 Give to him who asks you, and from him who wants to borrow from you do not turn away.

Our Rabbi gave a sermon on that 3 or 4 years ago.

"...to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me;" indicates that the 3rd and 4th generation also hate HaShem.

There is no commandment to obey your parents (or anyone else for that matter).

That is not exactly true, even in Torah. While not specified as a command, HaShem made it clear Israel was to obey Joshua:

Numbers 27:20 You shall put some of your authority on him, in order that all the congregation of the sons of Israel may obey him.

And in the Apostolic writings:

Eph 6.1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother (which is the first commandment with a promise), so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the earth.

Col 3:22 Slaves, in all things obey those who are your masters on earth, not with external service, as those who merely please men, but with sincerity of heart, fearing the Lord.

Heb 13:17 Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.
